I received her Bachelor's Degree in Public Health from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and her Master's Degree in Nutrition from the University of Utah, with an emphasis in Sports Nutrition and Eating Disorders. I spent nearly 10 years with the University of Utah Athletic Department, serving all female and male athletic teams, and the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, primarily treating patients with eating disorders. I have served on the U.S. Gatorade Nutrition Advisory Board and Speaker Network (a grand time!!!). I am currently a member of the Academy for Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN), and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). In private practice, I work with clients on a variety of issues including sports nutrition, eating disorders, intuitive eating, weight management, diabetes, allergies and intolerances, high cholesterol, healthy eating, meal planning, and other issues related to nutrition.

My Eating Disorder (ED) used to love telling me lies to keep me stuck and keep me from getting better. If you have (or have had) an eating disorder, you have probably been told similar lies.

One of the first things we do in eating disorder treatment is to start to separate your voice from the eating disorder’s voice. It is usually the mean and nasty voice in your head, but until you separate it it feels like your own. It can take people a while to separate their own thoughts from their eating disorders, but when they do, they can start to push against those thoughts.

Did you know that people can suffer from Summer SAD? SAD stands for seasonal affective disorder and I see quite a few patients who experience summer seasonal depression rather than winter seasonal depression.

For those who live in Utah or other hot areas, I think summer SAD can be caused by the extreme heat, which can force people to stay indoors. Less outdoor time in high summer heat compared to spring and Fall can lead to a depressed mood due to reduced sunshine (hello vitamin D) and the inability to do our favorite things. My patients with autoimmune disorders seem to suffer the most.

People often report:
-Low mood, sadness, and loss of interest.
-Increased fatigue and sleep problems.
- Decrease in appetite. This can often make eating regularly challenging, which can then make sticking to a meal plan difficult, further worsening mood.
- Increased anxiety.

If you think you suffer from Summer SAD, here are some recommendations:
- Get back on a good schedule. People often get off their routines in the summer, which can increase seasonal depression.
- Prioritize sleep, even if it doesn't get darker until later.
- Get outside daily for sunshine, preferably in the early morning before it gets too hot, to help maintain a stable circadian rhythm.
-Stay out of high heat to avoid overexertion and fatigue.
- Exercise regularly. Studies show that exercise is often as effective as an antidepressant in treating depression.
- Talk to and work with a therapist.

Lastly, be kind to yourself and allow for some grace while you are going through a rough patch. Things will get better!
