Surprise—this is FACT. Multiple studies, including some funded by our federal government, show time and time again that legalization of cannabis causes a gradual reduction of crime.

But note that one word: gradual. Researchers have found that legal cannabis is felt most powerfully after several years. But the reductions in violence, property crime, and partner violence are big—one study found California rates of violence and property crime fell by a whopping 20% after legalization.

Yes, this is still being said by people who are against cannabis legalization, but it is indeed a MYTH.

Scientific studies time and time again fail to show any causal link between cannabis use and use of illicit drugs. On the contrary, several studies point out that cannabis users are highly unlikely to move on to other drugs. Not only that, medical cannabis use has been identified as a factor in reducing opioid usage, potentially saving lives.

Boy, are we glad to tell you that this is a MYTH. In fact, we observe that many of our patients are actually able to lose weight after starting medical cannabis.

In a number of high-quality scientific studies, cannabis usage is associated with a healthier body mass index (BMI), as well as lower rates of hypertension, obesity, and adult-onset diabetes. In one study, adults using cannabis were 40% less likely to have an unhealthy BMI—that's a lot!

Looking for something milder to address your health needs? Cannabinol, or CBN, might just be your ideal companion.

CBN is formed when THC breaks down in the presence of oxygen. Like cannabidiol, its benefits include pain relief and neuroprotection.

But unlike cannabidiol, CBN is mildly psychoactive. And it is much less psychoactive than THC, making it a good choice for patients who prefer their sedation with a "lighter touch".

Cannabigerol (or CBG for short) shares a lot of traits with cannabidiol (CBD). Both are anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and neuroprotective.

But CBG has a more uplifting and energizing effect. It's found mainly in young cannabis plants, and often converts to other endocannabinoids as the plant ages.

And here's a surprise—CBG is proving quite effective in treating metabolic disorder. Studies suggest it works in multiple ways in the body, lowering blood pressure, improving insulin resistance, reducing obesity, and even helping maintain healthy cholesterol levels. And all without the discomfort and risk of weight-loss injections.

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, is the most abundant non-psychoactive endocannabinoid in cannabis. It binds primarily to CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. And as it isn't psychoactive, it's available for purchase in over-the-counter products.

Like many endocannabinoids, CBD is beneficial for relieving pain, nausea, seizures, and anxiety. But CBD is also neuroprotective (meaning it protects neurons in the brain), and shows promise in treating both cancer and the side effects of medical treatment.

A common mistake among medical cannabis users is the belief that THC does all the hard work, but that's just not true. If pain relief is your main goal, it's often better to select a product high in CBD with less THC. And it's a good choice for people who need to be alert and focused.

Let's start with the most well-known of the endocannabinoids, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (better known as THC). THC is the main psychoactive ingredient in medical cannabis, and has been used for centuries for relief of pain and other ailments.

THC binds to specific receptor sites in the endocannabinoid system (primarily CB1 and CB2 receptors), and works its magic by "damping down" the signals the receptors relay to the brain.

So what can THC do for me? It carries many potential benefits, such as pain relief, anti-nausea, appetite stimulation, anti-seizure, anti-anxiety, anti-insomnia, and anti-inflammation.

Did you know there's a chemical signalling system in the body which can affect appetite, pain sensation, mood, and memory?

The endocannabinoid system factors into much of our biology. It consists of neurotransmitters called endocannabinoids which bind to specific receptor sites in the nervous system. It can affect everything from fertility to how well we think.

Beyond the well-known THC, there are endocannabinoids which can help ease pain and help with other health issues. Over the next few weeks, we'll explore the endocannabinoid system and learn about some of the more important endocannabinoids and what they do in the body.
