Yes, kids and teens with T2D can have a treat or two during the Christmas holiday! 🍪🎅🏼

It’s important to not make anything taboo but rather just substitute or advise on moderation.

Make sure to check BG levels more often to prevent excessive highs or lows.

Check out this recipe that’s yummy & low carb! You can substitute sugar with Splenda and use sugar-free chocolate chips too!

No two kids handle their diabetes the same way. Meet with your child’s health care team to develop a personalized Diabetes Medical Management Plan (DMMP). Then visit the school and review the DMMP with the school nurse, nutrition service manager, teachers, and other staff who may have responsibility for your child.

The DMMP explains everything about diabetes management and treatment, including:

*Target blood sugar range
*hypoglycemia and how to treat low blood sugar
*Insulin or other medication used
*Meal and snack plans, including for special events
*How to manage physical activity/sports
The DMMP is essential and should be updated annually.

Sugar Free always sounds great but it’s not as simple as it sounds! Remember to look at carbs and deduct dietary fiber.
This can still be a great snack but only once you’re aware of your BG numbers.

Did you know that some teens diagnosed with Diabetes may also have Hypoglycemia Unawareness?
1 in 10 T2D (those treated with insulin) have Hypoglycemia Unawareness.
This means kids (or adults) can’t tell when they hit a low BG.
Dealing with Diabetes is never easy but adding HU, makes it that much harder.
HU does not allow you to recognize the needed signs to prevent a severe low that can lead to serious medical complications.

CGM’s such as the Libre 2 provides a glucose value every five minutes as well as trend information and optional alarms, alerting users of lows when they start or even before they happen.
Such a helpful tool in T2D management!
If you need more information on the Freestyle Libre 2, talk to your health care provider.

Diabetes makes some teens a target for bullying simply because we’re perceived as different. Whether it’s because of a visible insulin pump, CGM, or because we give ourselves shots, or if we get excused from class activities due to diabetes management.

Teens who get picked on about diabetes may be more likely to not take medication, not use their medical technology, and not seek medical attention when low or high– just to avoid the social consequences of being different. That’s scary.

Teens should NOT be afraid, self-conscious, or have a social fear about managing their diabetes.

Be confident. Speak up. Take pride. Educate others. Be kind.

Never let what others think influence decisions or actions about your own health & wellbeing.

Know your numbers & share the knowledge. You are more than your diagnosis.

Did you keep track of carbs during Christmas? 🎁🎄
Don’t be too hard on yourself. Stay active and get those steps in to account for extra carbs during these festive gatherings.
Reminder to be kind to yourself and stick to your goals, even if you have to reset them a bit.

You Are More Than A Number. More than your Diagnosis. Yes, numbers matter but don’t let them define you.

Remember that you’re allowed to be more than a number and bad days happen. This month, remember to prioritize your mental health, your overall sanity as you deal with your lifelong condition. This is only one part of who you are.

Kids who get type 2 diabetes are usually diagnosed in their early teens. One reason is that hormones present during puberty make it harder for the body use insulin, especially for girls, who are more likely than boys to develop type 2 diabetes. That’s an important reason to help your kids take charge of their health while they’re young.

Are you following up with your Endo regularly?
It’s definitely important to keep your appointments and know your numbers.
Make sure you take your meds as prescribed, stick to a healthy meal plan and get those labs drawn.
