Lipedema vs. Lymphedema vs. Obesity
Three different conditions. Three different causes. Three different treatments. But they all look the same from the outside, which is exactly why so people spend years getting the wrong answer.

Here is what separates them.
➡️Obesity is a distribution of weight across the whole body.
➡️Lymphedema is a drainage failure. The lymphatic system backs up and fluid accumulates, often from surgery, infection, cancer treatment, or untreated vein disease.
➡️Lipedema is something else entirely. It is an inherited connective tissue disorder that changes how fat grows, almost always in women, almost always from the waist down.
👍The difference that matters most? Look at the feet. In lipedema, the feet are normal. In lymphedema, the feet and toes swell. That one distinction can change everything about your diagnosis and your care.
If you have been told it is just weight, you may have been misdiagnosed. We are dedicated to education and awareness about all things vascular, arterial, and lymphatic health. Feel free to reach out to us.

❤️From Fighting for Her Life to Enjoying Life Again. This is Judith's Story❤️

In honor of , we bring you a powerful patient story.

Judith was suffering. After a painful surgery for neck pain, she gained weight that became difficult to lose. Her legs and abdomen kept swelling, and years of treatment failed to address the real cause. Eventually, she collapsed and nearly lost her life when excess fluid filled her lungs.

It was finally determined that it wasn’t water causing the swelling, but lymphatic fluid. Years of water pill therapy had impaired her kidneys and other organs, and Judith found herself facing lymphedema, stage one congestive heart failure, and third stage renal disease.

After finding Medical Vein Clinic, Judith began specialized treatment to improve her circulation and reduce the fluid buildup. Over time, her body began to heal.

"Lo and behold," Judith shared, "one day I woke up about 1.5 years later and my body just really wanted to walk. I started doing active stuff, cruising, enjoying life. I went from 260 pounds to 198 and from wearing 5X clothes to a size 18 today.

❤️ My memory has come back, my circulation is now working and I can keep off the weight now! I have no more congestive heart failure. After my body system got a chance to release all the poisons in there, I now can go to the gym, swim, and walk." ❤️

Relief for Chronic Pelvic Pain
Medical Vein Clinic is now offering minimally invasive outpatient, leading-edge procedure for chronic pelvic pain. Pelvic Venous Disorder is one of the common causes of chronic pelvic pain, which can be treated with a minimally invasive, catheter procedure to stent or embolize (“plug”) the problem pelvic vein that causes these symptoms.

What is Pelvic Venous Disorder ?
Pelvic Venous Disorder happens when ovarian and pelvic veins get dilated (congested) and form painful pelvic varicose veins. This condition can cause chronic pelvic pain in nearly a third of women during their lifetime, most commonly occurring between 20 and 50 years of age. After treatments, up to 85% of women find relief from symptoms within two weeks.

Does health insurance cover treatments?
Yes, most insurances cover treatment. It is imperative that you are seen by an expert physician as each case of Pelvic Vein Disorder is individualized to the person and must be managed in a customized manner. Most workups involve a detailed history, self-reporting of symptoms and very specific imaging such as ultrasound, MRI and CT. This workup allows us to create a plan tailored to get you the best results. Reach out ot us today to schedule your evaluation. You don't hae to suffer!

Millions of people live with knee arthritis pain, but not everyone gets enough relief from physical therapy, medications, or injections. At the same time, many people aren't ready for knee replacement surgery or may not be candidates for it.

Genicular Artery Embolization (G*E) offers another option. This minimally invasive procedure can help reduce knee pain for the right patients. As research continues to grow, leading experts now recognize G*E as a promising treatment when performed by trained specialists as part of a comprehensive care plan.

At Medical Vein Clinic, the G*E procedure is performed by Thomas Gianis, a board-certified vascular surgeon and fellowship-trained endovascular specialist, with extensive experience in minimally invasive vascular procedures.

If knee pain is limiting your mobility, keeping you from the activities you enjoy, or affecting your quality of life, our team can help you explore whether G*E may be right for you. Contact Medical Vein Clinic today to schedule a consultation and learn about your treatment options 210-622-8000.

What should I expect during a radiofrequency ablation (RFA) procedure for varicose veins, and how long does it take?
RFA is an outpatient procedure that uses heat to close a damaged vein. You stay awake the whole time, and there are no large incisions or stitches.

Here's what happens. Your leg is cleaned and numbed. Using ultrasound for guidance, your provider inserts a thin catheter into the vein through a small puncture. Numbing fluid goes in around the vein for comfort, then the catheter delivers energy that heats the vein wall and seals it shut. Your body reroutes blood to healthy veins nearby.
The ablation itself takes about 20 to 30 minutes per leg. With prep and wrap-up, plan on 60 to 90 minutes at the clinic. Most patients walk out on their own and return to normal activity the same day or the next.

The team at Medical Vein Clinic performs RFA at both our Stone Oak and Alamo Ranch locations. Have questions about whether RFA is right for your veins? Call us to schedule a consultation.

Why do my legs ache and swell by the end of the day?

For a lot of our San Antonio patients, the answer is venous reflux, and one of the treatments we use for it is Varithena.
Varithena is a foam, not surgery. No incisions, no general anesthesia, and most patients walk out the same day.

It's FDA approved and covered by most major insurance. Every patient at Medical Vein Clinic gets a diagnostic ultrasound first, so treatment targets the actual source of the problem, not just the veins you can see.
If your legs feel heavy or swollen most days, that's worth a look. We see patients at our Stone Oak and Northwest San Antonio locations.

Veterans, if knee pain has slowed you down, surgery isn't your only option.
Dr. David Gutierrez explains how chronic knee pain can sometimes trace back to vein health, and how addressing it can bring relief without an operation. For many of the veterans we see, getting to the real cause makes a difference walking, working, and getting through the day.
Genicular Artery Embolization (G*E) is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that provides long-lasting relief for chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Medical Vein Clinic offers G*E in San Antonio, performed by board-certified vascular surgeon Dr. Thomas Gianis. Most patients experience pain relief lasting three to five years. G*E takes 30 to 60 minutes, requires no hospital stay, and is covered by most insurance plans.

You may be a candidate if you have moderate to severe knee pain, have tried conservative treatments for at least six months, and are not ready or willing to undergo knee replacement surgery. Patients who have had a knee replacement but still experience pain may also qualify. Call 210-622-8000 to find out if G*E is right for you.
