Some women teach you how to fit in. Dolly Parton taught generations of women how to stand out.

As a little girl growing up in the Smoky Mountains, Dolly remembered seeing a woman in town with bright blonde hair, red lipstick, red nails and high heels. The adults called her the “town tramp.” Dolly thought she was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. When they told her that woman was “trash,” Dolly’s little-girl response was basically: Well then, that’s what I want to be when I grow up.

And somehow, that story says everything about Dolly.

She saw beauty where other people saw judgment. She took everything women were told was “too much” — too blonde, too made-up, too curvy, too sparkly, too loud, too ambitious — and made too much something to be proud of.

Dolly helped shape a generation of women who learned that femininity does not make you weak. Glamour does not make you shallow. You can love lipstick, rhinestones and big hair and still be smart, powerful, generous, talented and one hell of a businesswoman.

She never apologized for taking up space.

And maybe that is one of the greatest gifts she leaves women behind: the confidence to become exactly who you want to be, even when the world has something to say about it.

Today we lost more than a country music legend. We lost a woman who spent a lifetime reminding us that you can come from almost nothing, create yourself exactly as you imagine yourself, and never dim your light to make somebody else comfortable.

Rest easy, Dolly. 🤍

Thank you for the music.
Thank you for the laughter.
Thank you for the sparkle.
And thank you for teaching generations of women that there is absolutely nothing wrong with being a little too much.

Because sometimes “too much” is exactly enough. ✨
