Being this person takes something.

It takes experience being the wrong person.

Being the one to break hearts. Being the one able to recognize and accept your responsibility in doing so. Being the one to feel the pain you caused, acknowledge it and internalize the necessity never to behave in such a way again.

Saying or thinking that is not the same as being it. Because we all have habits that we have internalized over a lifetime. Protective behaviors designed to create a bubble of safety around us that no harm can pe*****te.

We cheat. We lie. We behave selfishly and in our own best interest. Those with the ability to understand their own culpability must examine these instances and own them fully, feel the pain we caused the other and truly repent. Not just for those who’ve been hurt but for ourselves.

And then, we must behave differently. Which means we must think differently. To think differently, one must have intimate knowledge of their own thought patterns, neuroses and projections.

Which takes something.

More than many are willing to take on.
