Ebola, formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a severe and often fatal illness in humans caused by a group of viruses called orthoebolaviruses. It is a zoonotic disease originating in animals (most likely fruit bats), which can spread to humans and then transmit person-to-person through direct contact with infected bodily fluids.

Key Facts About EbolaFatality Rate: The disease is highly lethal, with historical fatality rates averaging about 50%, though they have ranged from 25% to 90% in past outbreaks.Symptoms: Symptoms typically start 2 to 21 days after exposure and include sudden fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and unexplained bleeding or bruising.Transmission: It is not an airborne virus. It spreads exclusively through direct contact with broken skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth) with blood or body fluids (saliva, sweat, vomit, f***s, etc.) of a sick person, or through contaminated objects like needles.Outbreaks: It primarily occurs in remote areas of sub-Saharan Africa. For example, a Bundibugyo virus outbreak impacted the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.

Treatment & PreventionWhile Ebola is dangerous, significant advancements in medicine have improved survival outcomes:Vaccines: Highly effective vaccines have been developed and are actively deployed during outbreaks to stop the spread.Therapeutics: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved specific monoclonal antibodies (such as Inmazeb and Ebanga) to treat the infection.Supportive Care: Early medical care—such as rehydration with intravenous fluids and treatment of specific symptoms—drastically increases the chance of survival.

https://sat.ahasalerts.com/activealerts.aspx?id=9308

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch in your area.

Periods of showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall may cause flooding. Flooding of creeks and rivers and low lying areas is possible.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.

A Flood Watch is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.

One of the most common hormonal conditions affecting women is officially getting a new name – after experts admitted the old one has been misleading patients and doctors for decades.

Polycystic o***y syndrome, better known as PCOS, will now be called polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome – or PMOS – under new international guidelines unveiled at a major medical conference in Prague.

The overhaul follows years of debate involving almost 22,000 patients, doctors and researchers from around the world.

Experts behind the move say the original name focused too heavily on the ovaries and wrongly suggested women had ovarian cysts – when many never do.

Instead, specialists say the condition is a complex whole-body disorder affecting hormones, metabolism, fertility, mental health and the cardiovascular system.

'Renaming this condition is more than semantics; it's about finally recognizing the full reality of what patients experience,' said Dr Melanie Cree, a pediatric endocrinologist at the University of Colorado Anschutz and one of the experts involved in the research.

The condition affects up to 13 percent of women of reproductive age worldwide – more than 170 million people – and can trigger weight gain, acne, excess facial or body hair, irregular painful periods, infertility, anxiety and depression.

Yet despite being so common, experts estimate around 70 percent of sufferers remain undiagnosed. Researchers say the confusing name may be partly to blame.

Hantavirus is a group of rare, potentially fatal viruses transmitted to humans primarily through contact with infected rodents (mice, rats, voles) or their urine, droppings, and saliva. It causes severe respiratory illness, known as Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) in the Americas, or Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS) in Europe and Asia.

Key Facts About Hantavirus:

Transmission: Primarily through inhaling airborne particles from dried rodent droppings/urine, or touching contaminated surfaces and then the mouth/nose.

Symptoms: Early symptoms (1–8 weeks after exposure) include fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and headache. It progresses to coughing, shortness of breath, and fluid in the lungs.

Severity: HPS has a mortality rate of nearly 40%.

Outbreaks: Rare; one specific strain (Andes virus) can spread person-to-person, but this is uncommon.

Prevention: Avoid cleaning rodent-infested areas without proper protection (masks/gloves), seal homes against rodents, and keep food storage areas clean.

What is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)?
HPS is a severe respiratory disease caused by hantaviruses in the Americas. It affects the lungs, often requiring intensive care unit treatment.

What is Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS)?
HFRS is caused by Old World hantaviruses found in Europe and Asia. Symptoms include fever, headache, back/abdominal pain, and it can cause kidney failure.

Chickenpox vs. measles: What’s the difference?

Chickenpox and measles are both infectious diseases that are caused by viruses. They’re caused by two different viruses. Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Measles, also called rubeola, is caused by the measles virus.

Both diseases used to be common childhood infections, but now are preventable through vaccination. There are still far fewer cases of measles in the US each year than chickenpox.

Let’s take a deeper look at chickenpox and measles and see what makes them different.

Chickenpox vs. measles symptoms

The symptoms of chickenpox include:

a rash that initially shows up on your chest, face, and back, but can spread to the rest of your body

fever

headache

tiredness or fatigue

decreased appetite

The common symptoms of measles include:

a rash that first shows up at your hairline or forehead, and then spreads downward to other parts of your body

fever

hacking cough

runny nose

sore throat

red, inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis)

Koplik’s spots (small red spots with blue-white centers found inside your mouth and cheeks)

While both diseases cause a telltale rash to develop, the appearance of the rash differs between the two viruses. This can be a simple way to distinguish between the two diseases.

The chickenpox rash starts with raised red bumps or papules. These bumps turn into itchy fluid-filled blisters, or vesicles, that will eventually rupture and leak before scabbing over.

The measles rash appears as flat red spots, although raised bumps may sometimes be present. If bumps appear, they do not have fluid in them. The spots of the measles rash may begin to run together as the rash spreads.

Symptoms of Kidney Failure

Kidney failure symptoms may begin so gradually that you don’t really notice swelling, joint pain, or changes in how you urinate (p*e). Or, you may think that itchy skin and other signs are due to aging or another cause. The kidneys balance waste, fluid, and mineral levels in the body, and poor function can lead to body-wide effects.

Kidney failure due to chronic kidney disease (CKD) is evaluated in stages based on a blood test called the EGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate), though other tests are typically needed, too. When kidney function goes below 15% of normal EGFR, it’s classified as end-stage kidney failure. Acute kidney failure can occur too, usually due to a sudden injury, illness, or medication use.

Common Symptoms
Kidney failure symptoms can vary, and sometimes it’s difficult to notice them at first. There are common early symptoms, though, that can include:

1. Headaches
2. Itchiness
3. Swelling, especially in the ankles, legs, and feet
4. Daytime fatigue and trouble sleeping at night
5. Muscle cramps, weakness, or numbness
6. Little to no urinary output
7. Feeling sick to your stomach, changes in appetite and weight
8. Joint pain or stiffness
9. Confusion or memory problems
