Blue Sage Pediatric Speech & Language Therapy

Blue Sage Pediatric Speech & Language Therapy I meet children where they are at and honor their current communication abilities to support them as we develop new skills.

Helping children who are struggling to communicate so they can lead fulfilling and successful lives, enjoy strong relationships with friends and family, and advocate for their own needs, wants, and ideas. I take a child-led approach to speech therapy and prioritize establishing authentic, meaningful connections with my clients so they feel safe, comfortable, and motivated to learn. For young child

ren, this should look like play! Children should be *excited* for speech therapy! For older children, I incorporate their interests in our therapy sessions and target skills in natural contexts whenever possible. Regardless of a child's age or current communication abilities, one of my primary goals is always to help them develop confidence in their communication so they can effectively advocate for themselves and their needs. I believe in a team approach and aim to empower caregivers to be an active part of their child’s therapy team.

How do you know if your child needs speech therapy?

A good way to tell is look up communication milestones by age (recommended Google search with solid results from the American Speech and Hearing Association: "ASHA communication milestones by age")

In my opinion, that approach is a good starting point, but it misses a big part of the picture. We know that every child develops a little bit differently. Sometimes they catch up on their own, sometimes they don't. Some children don't follow the typical developmental path at all due to certain diagnoses or medical needs. And there are a LOT of other factors at play other than whether they are meeting their milestones or not.

So for me as a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist and Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinical Specialist, there are a few things that catch my eye when I am talking with a family or meeting a child for the first time. I do care about the milestones of course, but what I REALLY care about are the FUNCTIONAL impacts of communication! These are things that family members can easily identify, and they make a real impact in the child's day to day life.

For example:
-Frustration during communication

-Trouble following instructions to participate in daily routines

-Tantrums, meltdowns, or shutting down

-Trouble with things that peers seem to do easily

-Seeming confused

-Embarrassment or low self-esteem

-Avoidance of social interactions

-Being bullied for communication differences

If you are noticing these signs in your child, you may be seeing the functional impact of a speech or language delay. Communication touches everything! It affects relationships, learning, confidence, independence, and participation in daily life, so we can see the impact in any or all of these areas.

If any of these signs feel familiar to you and you wonder if your child might benefit from an assessment, please reach out to me. I would love to help. I always offer a free consultation call prior to scheduling any appointment so I can answer your questions, really talk about your concerns, and we can make sure that private therapy is a good option for your family.

What is a "Superbill?" How is it related to "In-Network" or "Out-of-Network" insurance billing?

A superbill is basically a detailed receipt from a healthcare provider that you can submit to your insurance for an out of network claim. For speech therapy, it includes the information insurance may need to review a claim, such as dates of service, diagnosis codes, procedure codes, provider information, and the amount paid.

In-network vs. out-of-network:

In-network means the provider has a contract with your insurance company.

Out-of-network means the provider is not contracted with your insurance company, but your plan may still offer out-of-network benefits. In that case, families usually pay the provider directly, receive a superbill, and submit it to insurance to request possible reimbursement as an out-of-network claim.

Why would a family consider out-of-network services (including speech therapy?)

For some families, it can mean:
β€’ Faster access to care
β€’ More choice in provider
β€’ A better specialty fit
β€’ More personalized support
β€’ Options in settings (clinic vs. at-home)

All that said, superbills are not a guarantee of reimbursement. Insurance may reimburse, partially reimburse, deny the claim, or request more information. Some plans don’t include out-of-network benefits, and some require a referral, prior authorization, or a deductible to be met first. Medicaid plans do not allow out of network providers, for example, but many commercial insurances do.

Before starting out-of-network therapy, it’s essential that you know your benefits! I created a downloadable "script" that I share with families when they are discussing their benefits with insurance so they can be sure to get the answers they need and be fully informed of their options when picking a healthcare provider.

If you’re wondering whether private speech therapy may be a good fit for your family or have superbill questions, I'd love to schedule a free consultation call to chat about details and go over options!

Another great day meeting families and other awesome professionals serving our local community! πŸ’™

My husband and I spent another great day meeting families and educating on topics like Autistic communication and speech and language developmental milestones! This time, we were at MindColor Autism at their new clinic grand opening in Helotes.

In addition to meeting the clinic staff and checking out their new space, we were also able to connect with other pediatric service providers who are providing exceptional care options for the community!

Huge thanks to MindColor Autism for inviting us to participate! We can't wait to continue doing these events and are so grateful for the opportunity to meet more community partners so we can all better serve our families. πŸ’™

If you have any questions about speech therapy or wonder if your child might benefit, please reach out to schedule a free 15 minute phone call consultation.

We are currently accepting inquiries for evaluations, therapy sessions, and Summer Speech, but spaces are limited and filling fast the closer we get to summer! β˜€οΈ
