What is IPR… and why do we sometimes use it during Invisalign treatment? 🦷

IPR (interproximal reduction) is a technique we can use to create a tiny amount of extra space between the teeth.
We’re usually talking about just 0.2–0.5 mm per spot — enough to help crowded teeth move into better positions without removing more tooth structure than necessary.

It can be especially helpful when:

✨ There’s moderate to severe crowding
✨ We need a little more room for teeth to move
✨ The upper and lower teeth need to fit together better
✨ We’re trying to avoid extractions when appropriate

It’s a small step that can make a big difference in creating the space we need for a healthier, more aligned smile.
Every Invisalign plan is different, which is why we always walk our patients through exactly what their treatment will involve before getting started.

Worried Invisalign could cause gum recession? Here’s what I tell my patients. 👇

When Invisalign is planned properly, noticeable gum recession typically shouldn’t be something you have to worry about. The bigger things I want you paying attention to are your oral hygiene and how you’re brushing.

If you’re going through Invisalign:

🦷 Keep your teeth and trays clean
🪥 Brush gently along the gum line
✨ Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
🧵 Floss consistently
😁 Wear your trays as directed

Bacteria buildup around the gum line and brushing too aggressively can both contribute to recession, so harder brushing definitely doesn’t mean better brushing!

Soft brush. Light pressure. Small gentle motions. That’s what we want. 🙌
