Plunkett was assigned to a team tasked with creating a non-toxic, non-flammable alternative to existing commercial refrigerants like sulfur dioxide and ammonia, which regularly posed deadly poisoning risks if household refrigerators developed leaks.

To synthesize a new chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant, Plunkett and his laboratory assistant, Jack Rebok, produced roughly one hundred pounds of tetrafluoroethylene gas (TFE). They stored the compressed gas in small steel cylinders, keeping them frozen on dry ice to prevent spontaneous chemical reactions until they were ready to be used.

Inside, they found that the pressurized TFE gas had completely vanished. In its place, the interior walls of the tank were coated with a smooth, waxy white substance. Under the intense cold and pressure inside the tank, with the iron walls acting as an accidental catalyst, the gas molecules had linked together into long polymer chains—a process known as polymerization.

Plunkett had accidentally created polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE.

When Plunkett began testing the mysterious white powder, its physical properties proved astonishing. The substance was chemically inert; neither boiling acids, corrosive bases, nor powerful solvents could dissolve it. It had an extremely high melting point, was an exceptional electrical insulator, and possessed the lowest coefficient of friction of any known solid material. Virtually nothing could stick to its surface.

DuPont patented the polymer in 1941 and registered the trademark name Teflon in 1945.

During World War II, Teflon was immediately classified as a military secret. Because of its extreme corrosion resistance, it was used to coat valves, gaskets, and pipes carrying highly corrosive uranium hexafluoride gas in the Manhattan Project.

In 1954, French engineer Marc Grégoire used PTFE to coat his fishing tackle, and at his wife Colette’s suggestion, applied it to an aluminum cooking pan, giving birth to the world-famous Tefal non-stick cookware brand.

In the local Mansi language, the name of that mountain translates to something chilling in hindsight: Dead Mountain.

They were not amateurs. This wasn't a group of thrill-seekers wandering into danger unprepared. Injuries that, according to some investigators, resembled the kind of blunt force trauma you'd expect from a car crash — without a single external wound to explain how it happened.

And then there was the clothing. Some victims were found wearing garments that didn't belong to them, as though, in their final moments, the group had been stripping clothes from those who could no longer use them, desperately trying to keep each other alive. Radiation was later detected on some of the clothing, a detail that has never been fully explained. Reports differ. Theories have multiplied for over sixty years. An avalanche, though the terrain and positioning of the tent make that explanation incomplete for many investigators. A secret military testing accident. Extreme infrasound generated by wind moving across the mountain's slope, capable of inducing panic and disorientation without any visible cause. Even wilder theories point to something stranger still, feeding off the eerie details that refuse to fit neatly into any single explanation.

What we're left with is a tent, cut open from the inside. Nine skilled hikers who did everything right, and still didn't make it down that mountain. A silence that has lasted over six decades, broken only by fragments of evidence that raise more questions than they answer.

Kholat Syakhl still stands exactly where it always has, indifferent to the mystery it holds. The snow still falls there every winter, the same way it fell in 1959, covering whatever secrets that slope might still be keeping. Investigations have reopened over the years. Documentaries have been made. Families waited a lifetime for an answer that never fully arrived.

Maybe some places aren't meant to give up what happened on them.
