In 2024 I studied Traditional Postpartum Healing Arts from Indigenous Mexico with Midwife Tema Mercado. At some point during the retreat she told us all that we were actually there to heal ourselves from our own postpartum experiences. I could have cried the entire weekend, but I didn’t want to be that girl.

In my own postpartum I felt deeply unseen at a time when I didn’t know myself well enough to know that even mattered to me. To this day almost seven years later, mothering is the hardest job I’ve ever done- physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. I used to work 3 jobs and do 2 hours of yoga a day and it did nothing to prepare me for motherhood.

I felt and still feel immense rage about the lack of respect and reverence our culture has for women stepping into the most important job— raising another human with love and care.

So I decided to take all of my fire and channel it into helping other women in the way I believe every new mom should be cared for. Each time I show up for someone else, I’m also showing up for myself and my daughter sending love forward and backward in time.

If you’re in San Diego and looking for postpartum care, DM me. I’ll roll out the red carpet for you. 🔥🔥🔥🔥

When planning for baby, remember to plan for yourself too. You deserve to be just as cozy and cared for. Until the village has been rebuilt, postpartum doulas are here to help.

A four hour session with a postpartum doula can look like a warm bowl of soup, a sweet treat, and a cup of tea. It can look like bodywork on the living room floor while your baby sleeps beside you, a sitz bath all by yourself, or closing of the bones at the end of your first 40 days.

It’s nice to have someone in your home who is there solely to care for you. 💕

Just a few of my favorite things to talk about on the internet as a postpartum doula and herbalist. 🙌

💫Every new mom deserves support.
💫Postpartum care for women’s health.
💫Herbs are preventative medicine in postpartum.
💫Food is the foundation of postpartum healing.
💫Postpartum doulas support new moms.

Giving birth and spending the next several months exhausted and home alone with your baby is not normal. You deserve to be cared for just as much as your baby does. Postpartum can be restful and full of joy. I’m here to support new moms as they step into motherhood.

Got a question about postpartum? Drop it in the comments, so we can all learn from each other. ⬇️

The majority of women I speak with are on their own with a newborn when their partner has to return to work 2-3 weeks after the baby is born. Women are still healing at this point, still getting to know their baby, still figuring out breastfeeding, still getting used to caring for someone else 24/7, still needing care themselves.

When we talk with friends and moms at the park we find that everyone has a similar story, so we think it’s normal. We think being a new mom is supposed to be hard, so we start sending our friends frazzled mom memes and talk about how we miss hot coffee.

There’s nothing normal about one person taking care of another all day and all night, leaving them no time to take care of themselves. If you find yourself in this position and you feel unwell, that’s normal.

If you’ve called your friends and family, but no one can help, call a postpartum doula. Postpartum doulas support new moms. They are here to help. Invite one into your home once a week and you will see it’s money well spent. 🙌

Traditional healing systems around the world honor the postpartum period. That means for thousands of years people have known that postpartum is a specific time in a woman’s life where she needs to care for herself and be cared for differently than she normally would.

This is important because traditional systems of healing such as Traditional Mexican Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and many more, are based on healing the body as a whole- body, mind, spirit.

Everything is connected. Nothing is separate. Insurance companies are not involved. They look at what truly works for a woman to thrive after birth and they uphold it. This has been practiced for a very long time and when you begin to study it, you see that no matter which system it is, the principles are the same.

✨A significant period of rest somewhere between 30-42 days depending on the system you are working with.

💫Warm, easy to digest, nourishing foods

✨Bodywork

💫Community support for the mother so she can focus on caring for her baby

If you’re wondering if postpartum care is worth the investment or absolutely necessary, the answer is yes.

We shouldn’t need studies and scientific proof to justify caring for women after birth.

I wish more new moms knew to ask themselves before any app or ChatGPT. What if we trusted ourselves as much as we trust the research?

What if we tracked sensations in our body instead of how many steps we took today?

What if we practiced getting comfortable with how uncomfortable it is to live in the unknown?

I wonder what information would eventually rise from the depths of our body to point us in the right direction. Information that is uniquely our own meant for one mother and one baby. That’s the kind of nuance that technology will never hold.

Kinda lame we don’t have a village, but kinda chic more and more women are prioritizing postpartum care. I don’t think we can go back to the village that once was, but we can build something new. 💕

Hey Girl,

I know you’ve been told that rest is for a select few and you can’t afford that luxury. I also know that at some point you received the message that your worth is based on your level of productivity and that resting is “lazy.”

Postpartum is the time to undo what you’ve been taught. It’s a time for rewiring your brain and tuning into your body. If you want to heal and return to your vibrant, thriving self, then you’ve gotta rest like it’s your job, because it is. Rest is necessary for postpartum healing. When you view it as a luxury and dismiss it, you are only hurting yourself.

Failure to rest can result in prolonged bleeding, prolapse, fatigue, exhaustion, and an overall feeling of uneasiness in the mind and body.

The first step to postpartum healing is simple- REST yo self on the couch or in bed and stay there for longer than you think you should. Then, when you think that surely you should get up now, resist the urge and rest some more.

When you find yourself struggling to release your attachment to productivity, consider that you just produced another human.☑️ It doesn’t get more productive than that.

It’s okay to rest. 💕

In “The Complete German Commission E Monographs: Therapeutic Guide to Herbal Medicines” out of 254 approved herbs, 26 single herbs were cited for restricted use during pregnancy and 11 were contraindicated during lactation.

The German Commission E Monographs is a collection of official scientific evaluations regarding the safety and efficacy of hundreds of herbs.

These studies show us that, yes, there are some herbs that should not be used when breastfeeding, but there are many herbs that are perfectly safe to use.

If you want to use herbs in pregnancy or while breastfeeding, but don’t know where to start, contact your local herbalist. Talking to someone who works with and studies medicinal plants is always better than talking to someone who doesn’t.

I love using herbal medicine when I work with women in the postpartum time because plants work on many levels at once. An herb that restores nutrients can also soothe the nervous system. An herb that can calm a fussy baby can tend a tired mom’s heart.

Herbs are gentle and safe support for restoring balance and preventing illness after pregnancy and birth. In my practice I use herbs for lactation, perineal healing, clogged ducts, insomnia, anxiety, baby blues, stress, fatigue, depletion, and rebuilding the body after pregnancy and birth.

Every new mom will benefit from having a few simple herbs on hand. Some of my favorite postpartum herbs to work with are chamomile, lemon balm, lavender, rose, milky oats, raspberry leaf, catnip, and blessed thistle.

Make herbs a part of your postpartum plan.
