News flash your jaw is not separated from the rest of your body. I’m sorry there’s no such thing as a TMJ specialist. If you only look at the TMJ you already missed it.

The cranium or skull is complex but yet simple if you understand the mechanics. The frontal face works like a door with a frame and the jaw works like a hinge.
Additionally the mechanics work alongside the rest of the fascia and position of the pelvis, alongside the movement and position of the tongue, and breathing.

As an adult there’s no way you can work with one person and fix tmj. It’s a team effort working with cranial bones, imaging, Myofunctional therapists, breathing and functional appliances with the dentist to make lasting changes. There’s no TMJ injection, laser or mouth guard that will do anything to fix the imbalances, and most leave you worse. That’s because you have to look at the entire human in front of you.
When you Unlock the system —-> create change.

One thing I see consistently is a disrupted gut brain axis due to trauma to the nervous system/cranial area.

Whether from a big stressful event like divorce, abuse, emotional trauma and unprocessed emotions, physical traumas like concussions, orthodontics, pulling teeth, car accidents, falls or even stemming back to the womb and stressors in the mom causing trauma to the developing nervous system and primitive reflexes.

It’s a canary in the coal mine. Tension and stress in the cranium and pelvis and you’ll find a tight gallbladder/liver. Tension under the right rib cage, pain or tension into the right hand thumb web, food allergies, leaky gut, constipstion, weakness in the hip flexors. All due to the connection between the gut and brain being off.

You can take all the supplements in the world for the liver and gallbladder but if the connection system isn’t online and connected you’ll chase it. We’ve saved lots of organs including the gallbladder working on the nervous system connection. And then we work on cleansing the gut/bile and other digestion support.

Brain work is always first.

What if the story of your health started *before you were born?*

Every human begins as a single cell — receiving signals from its environment. Stress. Toxicity. Nutrition. Nervous system regulation. Even the health of the mother influences development from amniotic fluid.

Like origami, the body folds and adapts to the signals it receives.

Sometimes what we call “symptoms” later in life may actually be adaptations that began long before birth.

The question isn’t: *What’s wrong with the body?*
The question is: *What did the body have to adapt to?*

Straight teeth don’t equal a healthy system.

When the mouth can’t accommodate all 32 teeth…
that’s not random. That’s a signal.

A signal that development was interrupted—
from breathing, chewing, speech, posture, even how you move through the world.

But instead of asking why,
we force the outcome.

We straighten. We align. We “fix” the look.

At any cost.

It’s like changing the arrows on a highway…
without changing where the cities actually are.

The direction looks right—
but the system underneath is still lost.

Your face isn’t just aesthetics.
It’s an avatar of your nervous system.

And when the face is distorted,
it often reflects a system that’s dysregulated—
not fully in harmony.

This is the conversation most people aren’t having, thankfully is.

When I became a pediatric craniopath we learned about assessing primitive reflexes in an infant as part of the examination of the infant. What I wasn’t taught was how these also affect children and adults later in life if not integrated properly.

Everything revolves around the brain and nervous system, and the airway is a full body approach not just your nose or your throat. The body is a storage center, and the structure forms due to input.

While I don’t do courses on primitive reflexes, I’ve done Podcasts with people that do like that taught me a lot and integrating movement based therapies to help turn these reflexes off if you didn’t get appropriate nervous system care when you were a baby. These can be super impactful and helpful in turning around a nervous system, releasing tension patterns alongside SOT chiropractic work. Airway is an integrated approach and usually takes multiple people working together to create the best scenario for people.
It also takes dealing with body traumas and other sources.

It’s not just throwing an expander in or mouthpiece you found online. Work with real people who understand a full body approach and have case studies to provide it. Let’s do better with education to actually help people.

Airway is not just your throat or your nose or your tongue… I know you see this a lot from airway experts, dentists etc., but it is a full body approach. The body isn’t not siloed. When you’re looking at someone’s posture it’s not a hold this position more or do this exercise… it’s an entire nervous system stuck.

When you start addressing neurology and balancing from a functional lense, you see changes in the entire system, not just a measurement on an image. And this takes a village. SOT chiropractors, sometimes neuro based exercises or vision therapy, breathing and postural retraining, Myofunctional therapy, looking into traumas that person is holding, then working with dentists, ENTs or other practitioners. Every person is different but it’s not a slap this on your mouth bandaid.

Retraining takes time. But it’s unwinding what led you there in the first place.

All of the cranial bones are important, and all of them work together so you really can’t single out a bone, but we can talk about how important the sphenoid bones movement is to the rest of the cranium and the effects of symptoms that can arise when it’s not balanced.

Your brain controls everything, so this is reason #1 we focus first on freeing up movement to allow it to signal appropriately. It’s also really important to balance these movements before going into orthodontics, dentistry and others or else you will make bone changes into distorted patterns.

Cranial and osteopathy can help to balance these systems, if they are done well. There’s no other profession that can move these. There’s no exercise or movement, you have to physically move them into place, and then train muscles and neurology.
