The Southern California Association of Neonatal Nurses (SCANN), a chapter of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), began in 1989 to provide nurses who work with high-risk neonates an organization to meet their professional needs. SCANN received its charter at the NANN National meeting in New York City in 1991.

Meet another of our bright conference speakers, Dr. Bridget Kelley!

Dr. Bridget Kelley received her B.A. degree with honors in Biology and Spanish from Dartmouth College and graduated from the New York University School of Medicine with her Medical Doctorate Degree. She successfully completed her Pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and her Neonatology fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital in June 2019. In addition to her clinical work in the NICU, Dr. Kelley has an interest in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). She previously directed the Infant Chronic Lung Disease Program at CHLA, where she developed protocols and a multidisciplinary plan of care for both the prevention and management of BPD. She has also participated in national research efforts through the BPD Collaborative, with a focus on neurodevelopmental outcomes for infants with severe BPD, with recent publications in the Journal of Pediatrics and Journal of Perinatology. She is currently an attending neonatologist at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center and Sharp Grossmont Hospital, where she continues to work on improving the management and outcome for infants with BPD.

Meet SCANN’s premiere conference speaker! 💡

Lori Kaczmarek is a Vascular Access Clinical Specialist and Director of Clinical Education at H.B. Fuller Medical Adhesive Technologies. She has led vascular access teams across the Midwest and held multiple leadership roles with the Association for Vascular Access (AVA), including President (2020, 2025-present) and Secretary (2018, 2024).
A past president of the AVA Foundation and former AVA Journal editor, Lori also served as a practice reviewer for the 2021 and 2024 INS Infusion Therapy Standards. She holds a master’s degree in nursing with a specialization in Health Care Informatics and frequently speaks nationally and internationally on tissue adhesives, vascular access insertion and maintenance, and data tracking.

NIRS Monitoring in Neonates With Mild HIE

Mild hypoxic–ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is increasingly recognized as a condition that can still carry risk for adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.

A new 2026 clinical practice guideline highlights the potential role of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as a continuous, noninvasive tool that may help identify changes in cerebral oxygenation earlier and support timely neuroprotective care.

Key recommendations:
• Start NIRS within the first 6 hours of life
• Continue continuous cerebral monitoring for the first 24 hours in term infants ≥36 weeks with mild HIE
• Standardize sensor placement and skin care to maintain accurate readings and protect fragile neonatal skin
• Prompt nursing assessment and escalation are recommended when rScO₂ 85–90%
• Use NIRS alongside the clinical exam, EEG/aEEG, and other neurologic monitoring—not as a standalone assessment.

Did you know that white noise may help reduce pain and stress in newborns during common NICU procedures?

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 13 randomized controlled trials involving 721 neonates and found that white noise was associated with lower pain scores, improved oxygen saturation, more stable heart rates, and shorter crying times during painful procedures.

📌 Procedures studied included:
• Heel sticks
• Venipuncture
• IV insertion
• Blood sampling
• Intramuscular injections
• Other routine invasive procedures

💡 How was white noise used?
Most studies played continuous white noise at a safe sound level (typically around 50–65 dB) beginning a few minutes before the procedure, continuing throughout the procedure, and for several minutes afterward.

👶 Common NICU implementation ideas:
• Use a bedside sound machine or approved white noise device
• Begin white noise 2–5 minutes before the procedure
• Continue during and after the procedure
• Combine with other evidence-based comfort measures: swaddling, facilitated tucking, non-nutritive sucking, skin-to-skin care when appropriate, sucrose administration per unit policy

White noise is inexpensive, noninvasive, and easy to implement, making it a promising addition to neonatal pain management bundles. While more large-scale studies are needed, current evidence suggests it may help make routine procedures less stressful for our smallest patients.
