We talk about tension like it begins in the muscles
Sometimes, it begins much earlier
In the moment life becomes uncertain, the nervous system starts searching for something it can control
The neck braces
The shoulders carry
The body holds
We tighten around plans, outcomes, routines, other people.
We take on responsibility that was never actually ours
Not because we’re “controlling”
Because certainty can feel like protection
And caring can quietly become carrying
There’s a difference between loving someone and holding their fear for them
Between taking action and trying to control an outcome
Between responsibility and weight that was never ours
The body often feels that difference before we name it
So when tension keeps returning, alongside treating the muscle, it may be worth asking:
What am I gripping that I cannot control?
What am I carrying that does not belong to me?
Some things need our action
Others need our release
Let the body learn the difference 🌊
