This is why post-op X-rays matter after a deep cleaning.

The first X-ray shows heavy calculus buildup hiding beneath the gum line and between the teeth. The second X-ray confirms complete removal of tartar/calculus.

Dear patients, this is why your deep cleaning is so important. Periodontal disease happens below the gum line and around the teeth, so removing tartar only above the gums will not address the disease or promote proper healing. It’s important to make sure all calculus is removed so you know you received an effective cleaning and true value for your money.

A deep cleaning isn’t finished just because the appointment is over. Confirming removal with post-operative X-rays helps ensure your gums have the best chance to truly heal and reattach properly.

Sooo…If you’re getting SRP/deep cleaning treatment, don’t be afraid to ask: “Will we be taking post-op X-rays to confirm all calculus was removed?”

Your gums deserve more than a guess.

What is C-shaped flossing? 👀

C-shaped flossing means curving the floss tightly around the side of each tooth so it hugs the surface below the gumline. Instead of snapping floss straight between teeth, you gently guide it into a “C” around one tooth, move it up and down, then repeat on the neighboring tooth.

Benefits of C-shaped flossing:
• Removes plaque more effectively
• Cleans below the gumline
• Helps prevent cavities between teeth
• Reduces gum inflammation & bleeding
• Helps fight bad breath
• Supports healthier gums long-term

Your flossing technique matters just as much as flossing itself .

Do hygienists have to use the power tool?
No… but there’s always a BUT 👀

The ultrasonic scaler (Cavitron) is often used first because it’s one of the most effective ways to remove heavy calculus and disrupt bacteria below the gumline. The vibration helps break up tartar, and the water spray creates irrigation that helps flush out debris + bacteria from under your gums.

Then we follow up with manual hand instruments to refine what the ultrasonic loosens, checking for remaining deposits, getting into tight areas, and smoothing the root surface for the cleanest finish.

Using both isn’t “extra”… it’s evidence-based and considered the gold standard for thorough cleanings.

Because the goal isn’t just to make teeth look clean… it’s to make gums healthy. ☺️

The most effective cleaning while you’re in traditional braces is to remove your bands and wires before your cleaning.

When they’re removed, the cleaning is:
✅ more thorough
✅ more comfortable
✅ better at preventing cavities and white spots
✅ better for reducing gum inflammation and bleeding

⚠️ Bands and wires should ONLY be removed by your orthodontic office.

Fun fact: Your hygienist and dentist don’t look for the same things on x-rays!

Hygienists are trained to spot hidden calculus (tartar) lurking under the gumline, often only visible on x-rays. This buildup can lead to gum disease if left untreated.

Dentists are typically focused on detecting cavities, decay, and tooth structure issues.

💜 As hygienists, we’re looking at the bigger picture…supporting the gums, bone, and foundation of the tooth… because our goal is to help save the tooth as a whole, not just treat what you can see.
