As long as you have a piece of calculus (hardened tartar) stuck beneath your gums, they can continue to bleed no matter how much you brush and floss.

Brushing and flossing are essential, but they can’t remove hardened calculus once it forms. That’s why professional dental cleanings are so important. Once the calculus is removed, your gums finally have the opportunity to heal, inflammation can decrease, and bleeding often improves with good home care.

Healthy gums don’t happen by chance, they happen with the right care. 💜

What do “gum measurements” mean?

During your dental visit, your provider uses a small instrument called a periodontal probe to measure the space between your tooth and your gums. The probe has tiny millimeter (mm) markings that help us measure the depth of these spaces, also called gum pockets.

In general:
1–3 mm = Healthy gum pockets
4 mm or more = May indicate gum inflammation or periodontal (gum) disease and may require further evaluation or treatment
