Most of the hormone conversation is focused in the wrong place.

Estrogen. Progesterone. Testosterone. These are the symptoms of a system that’s struggling. Not the cause.

The cause lives upstream.

In the liver and the gut.

Here’s what I mean.

Your liver is responsible for breaking down and clearing every hormone your body produces. When it’s overburdened and sluggish estrogen doesn’t get cleared properly. It recirculates. It accumulates. And that excess estrogen drives the symptoms most women are told are just their hormones misbehaving.

The belly fat that won’t move. The bloating. The mood swings. The heavy painful periods. The brain fog. The exhaustion. All of it is estrogen dominance driven by a liver that can’t keep up.

Now add the gut.

Inside your gut microbiome lives something called the estrobolome. A specific collection of bacteria whose entire job is to metabolize estrogen and prepare it for elimination. When your gut is compromised through antibiotics, stress, poor diet, or dysbiosis the estrobolome can’t function. Estrogen recirculates back into the bloodstream instead of clearing. And the whole cycle continues.

This is why women can do everything right. Eat clean. Take the supplements. Follow the protocols. And still not feel right.

Because the liver and the gut were never addressed.

When those two systems are supported and functioning the way they were designed to your hormones don’t need to be forced into balance.

They find it.

Brain fog. Belly fat. Bloating.

Most women are told this is just perimenopause. Just hormones. Just getting older.

But perimenopause didn’t cause these symptoms.

It exposed what was already happening underneath.

Here’s what’s actually driving them.

The liver. When it’s sluggish it can’t clear estrogen properly. Estrogen accumulates. That drives bloating, belly fat, and mood instability that feels like it came out of nowhere.

The gut. When the microbiome is compromised and the gut lining is permeable inflammation spreads systemically. That inflammation shows up as brain fog, bloating, and weight your body refuses to release.

The minerals. Magnesium, zinc, copper, and iron regulate everything from cortisol to thyroid function to blood sugar stability. When they’re depleted your brain and your metabolism have nothing to run on. Brain fog and stubborn weight are almost always part of this picture.

The cortisol pattern. Chronic stress keeps cortisol elevated. Elevated cortisol drives belly fat storage specifically. It also disrupts sleep, depletes progesterone, and keeps your nervous system in a state of low grade emergency that no amount of clean eating can override.

The nervous system. A nervous system trained to live in survival mode keeps all of the above running in the wrong direction. This is the piece most practitioners skip entirely.

Perimenopause didn’t break you.

It just turned up the volume on a foundation that needed attention long before your hormones started shifting.

I see this all the time.

She’s done the research. She’s made the changes. She cut gluten. She’s taking magnesium. She’s eating cleaner than she ever has.

And she still wakes up exhausted. Still can’t lose the weight. Still has brain fog. Still feels off in a way she can’t explain.

And she’s starting to wonder if she’s just broken.

She’s not broken.

She’s mineral depleted. And magnesium is only one piece of a much bigger picture.

Here’s what most people don’t understand about minerals.

They’re not supplements you add on top of an already functioning system. They’re the foundation the entire system runs on.

Every single process in your body requires minerals to function.

Your thyroid can’t convert without selenium and zinc. Your cortisol can’t regulate without magnesium and sodium. Your cells can’t hold hydration without the right mineral balance. Your liver can’t detox properly without copper. Your energy production at a cellular level requires iron, magnesium, and B vitamins working together.

When minerals are depleted nothing works the way it’s supposed to. Not your hormones. Not your metabolism. Not your gut. Not your brain.

And here’s the thing most people miss.

You can’t just take a magnesium supplement and call it done. Minerals work together in ratios. When one is depleted others are affected. When one is supplemented in isolation others get thrown off. This is why so many women take handfuls of supplements and still don’t feel right.

It’s not about adding more.

It’s about understanding what your body is actually working with. Testing what’s depleted. Replenishing in the right order. Building the foundation first before anything else.

Cutting gluten and adding magnesium is a start.
