A simple kitchen ingredient might soon become a life-saving medical tool thanks to a 17 year old high school student from Iowa. Dasia Taylor has drawn international attention for inventing surgical sutures that change color when an infection starts. The stitches use beet juice, which reacts to shifts in pH, giving patients and doctors an immediate way to see how a wound is healing. Traditional monitoring often depends on costly equipment or a trained clinician making rounds. Taylor's approach costs almost nothing and works at a glance.

The trick is in how beet juice responds to acidity. Healthy skin sits around a pH of 5, which is mildly acidic. When bacteria start to take over, the pH climbs toward 9, a more alkaline environment. The beet dye reads that shift. A clean wound keeps the sutures a bright, almost cheerful red. An infection pushes them toward a deep, bruised purple. The change happens fast, often before a patient would feel any real difference, which gives doctors a head start on treatment. ā ļø

Taylor built the project with places like sub-Saharan Africa in mind, where patients may live hours from a clinic and post-operative infections kill people who would otherwise recover. In many of those regions, a surgical wound is closed, the patient goes home, and nobody checks on the incision until it is already a crisis. A suture that broadcasts its own infection status, in a color anyone can see, would close that gap. Taylor has said she wants to cut the death rate from preventable surgical infections, and she picked beet juice because it is cheap, familiar, and already grown in the places that need it most. š”

In 2021, Taylor was named a finalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, putting her alongside some of the strongest young scientists in the country. The sutures are not on the market yet. She is still testing how well they hold up inside a real wound, how long the color signal lasts, and whether they can survive sterilization. Early results look promising, and several research groups have reached out about collaborations. If the threads clear clinical review, they could become one of the cheapest diagnostic tools in any hospital.
