How do babies learn to talk? When my first baby, Chrissy, was 9 months old, she said her first 'sentence' of two words as she offered her Uncle Steve a potato chip. She said, " Stebe, Baca"? Baca was her word for potato chip.
From the time of her birth, I talked to her, explained what I was doing. I read her books every day, pointed at pictures of the things I was reading about then asked her to point it out. Like the cat jumped on the fence. Where is the cat, Chrissy? At 6 months she understood but couldn't speak. I was preparing her lunch, she was in her highchair "yelling" at me. I turned around and explained that I was heating her food, that she needed to wait. She stopped yelling and waited. I used a lot of simple repetitive phrases when explaining things to her; let's go change your diaper, time to eat, read a book, go 'nite nite,' and I named the things I fed her or toys we played with. Low on the front of the refrigerator, I taped bright squares of colored paper with the name of the color printed on it and put magnetic letters on it for her to play with.
Today I would teach my 5 month-old baby sign language for simple things like drink, eat, hungry, etc.
I know there are many resources and ideas on the internet, making it so easy to teach your baby. Just talk, respond, repeat, read, play; keep it simple and fun. It is a delight to watch them discover the world!

This format (FB as a teaching tool) is a learning process for me. I am in wonder and awe when I watch a very young child navigate technology. I was 50 + years old when I purchased my first mobile phone and it was to be used for safety on the road when I traveled. Now, 20+ years later, it is a different world. How do you think screen time affects the very young; advantages and disadvantages?
