Amy has worked with individuals with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities for over 20 years in home, school, community, and clinical settings.

Amy has extensive experience working directly with individuals with disabilities of all ages and has spent the latter part of her career creating innovative programs to assist young adults with the transition into adulthood. She has authored the Rooted In Connection curricula that teaches comprehensive s*x education with an emphasis on relationships, social boundaries, assertiveness, and abuse prevention for individuals with disabilities of all ages (Youth through Adult).
Amy's drive to reduce s*xual exploitation stems from her direct work with countless individuals and families who have shared their personal stories of exposure, assault and s*xual abuse.

Remember that S*x Education doesn't start with S*x! It is critical for students with disabilities to be taught information regarding relationships, consent, and boundaries from an early age.

Schools and programs must be providing adapted materials and instruction so that people with I/DD are not left out of this conversation.

NPR conducted a yearlong investigation that found that “People with intellectual disabilities are s*xually assaulted at a rate seven times higher than those without disabilities.”

How many times does someone need to be abused, assaulted or coerced before they are allowed to have access to social-s*xual education to learn social boundaries and protective factors to keep themselves safe? Education is important and needs to start early.

Learning about relationships is an important part of every child's life. Teaching this information along with assertiveness can increase self-esteem and helps to promote healthy and safe relationships throughout their lives. Having the confidence to identify what a healthy relationship looks like, and how to maintain appropriate boundaries, not only reduces the risk for abuse, but provides the individual with tools that help them navigate an ever changing social landscape.

At STC we teach that you are the most important person in your life! To build a healthy self-concept and to understand social boundaries, individuals with disabilities should learn self-advocacy, self-love, and protective skills before anything else.
