''My name is Shelley Crawford and I am a postgraduate student in the School of Psychology at the University of East London and am studying for a Master of Science in Applied Positive Psychology and Coaching Psychology. As part of my studies, I am conducting the research you are being invited to participate in.
What is the research?
I am conducting research into the reasons why women who have had either a uni or bilateral mastectomy after breast cancer with or without reconstruction, acquire a tattoo over the scarring and the impact the tattooing has had on them.
My research has been approved by the School of Psychology Research Ethics Committee. This means that the Committee’s evaluation of this ethics application has been guided by the standards of research ethics set by the British Psychological Society.
The intention of this research is to hear your story and acknowledge the strength that you have shown during your experience.
I am inviting participants for my research are:
Female breast cancer survivors
o between the ages of 18-65
o who acquired a decorative (non-medical) tattoo on their mastectomy scarring
o may or may not have had reconstruction (it doesn't matter one way or the other)
If you agree to participate you will be asked to
• Attend an online ‘interview’ of approximately 90 minutes, via the University of East London’s Microsoft Teams video account. All links and information to login to the session will be given to you before the session.
• The interview will take the form of an informal chat, steered by several open questions about your experience of the mastectomy/s, reconstruction (if applicable) and tattooing – the aim of which are to better understand your own personal experience of the topics under investigation, therefore there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers.
• The conversation will be video/audio recorded in accordance with the University of East London’s data protection protocols and the UEL Code of Research Ethics.
• During analysis of the conversation, you will be given a pseudonym and any identifying information will be omitted from the written transcript.
If you interested, please email me at [email protected] (my student email address).
