Diana's life changed suddenly when flu-like symptoms became life-threatening.

Diana was rushed to the hospital and admitted to the ICU. Bird dust exposure led to an infection that caused sepsis.

After months of intensive treatment, rehabilitation, and difficult life changes, Diana is now back to part-time hairdressing and regaining her strength.

She shares her story to offer hope and remind others never to give up.

June is about looking ahead and taking action.

As we host the second annual Unite for Sepsis Symposium (June 11–12), we’re bringing together clinicians, researchers, survivors, and advocates to advance the future of sepsis care. Through innovation, collaboration, and shared purpose, we’re exploring breakthroughs in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and survivorship.

This is the month to ask bold questions, share discoveries, and accelerate progress because the future of sepsis care depends on what we do today.

"I was forty-four years old on May 5, 2018, when I loaded all four of my kids into the car to see [a movie]. It was supposed to be a normal Saturday—a couple hours of popcorn, superheroes, and being a dad. But as the movie played, something inside me felt wrong. I kept coughing, over and over, each one hitting deeper than the last. Then, in the middle of that crowded theater, something exploded in my chest. It didn’t feel like a cough anymore—it felt like a bomb going off under my ribs."

Sean survived his sepsis experience.

"Seven years have passed since that nightmare, but it never truly leaves. The nerve damage around my left ribs burns every day. The long-term effects follow me everywhere I go. Some mornings I wake up and feel every inch of what I went through. But I also wake up. And that, to me, is everything."

Sepsis Alliance is saddened by the passing of NASCAR champion Kyle Busch following severe pneumonia and sepsis. We extend our condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and fans.

His passing is a heartbreaking reminder that sepsis can happen to anyone and can progress quickly from an infection like pneumonia.

Know the signs: temperature change, infection, mental decline, and extreme illness/shortness of breath.

Early recognition saves lives. Learn more at Sepsis.org.

Ernie's sister, Marsha, continues to honor her brother's memory after he lost his life to sepsis.

Ernie developed sepsis from an undiagnosed case of pneumonia. His condition worsened quickly, and he wasn't able to receive care in time.

In his honor, Marsha hopes to raise awareness in her community and inspire stronger sepsis prevention and training in healthcare settings across California.

To better understand sepsis experiences and post-sepsis journeys, we're asking Sepsis Survivors to take a survey. Your responses will help shape future research, education programs, and policy initiatives designed to support survivors and families impacted by sepsis.

Survey results will be shared anonymously in aggregate at the Unite for Sepsis Symposium this June, as well as through Sepsis Alliance news and social channels.
