Reinforcement is about what happens next—and how it influences a skill over time. 💙🧡

A favorite activity, shared attention, or help with a task may be reinforcing when it makes a behavior more likely to happen again. What works can look different for every child!

Notice the skills your child is building, respond to their communication, and celebrate progress in ways they enjoy.

October is a reminder to keep learning, listening, and making space for every individual. 🍂💙

At Positive Behavior Steps, we recognize that people learn, communicate, and experience the world in different ways. Understanding those differences helps us build a more welcoming and supportive community.

This month, we’re highlighting awareness around communication, learning, and mental health—with compassion and inclusion that continue all year.

Up next: our “ABA Terms Made Simple” series explores AAC and the many ways people communicate. 💬

Communication is more than just the words we say. 💬🧡

In ABA, we often talk about receptive and expressive communication—but what do those terms actually mean?
👂 Receptive communication is how we understand messages from others.

💬 Expressive communication is how we share our own wants, needs, thoughts, and feelings.

And communication doesn’t always look like spoken words! It can include gestures, pointing, signs, pictures, AAC, facial expressions, and more. 🌱

At Positive Behavior Steps, we meet each child where they are and create natural opportunities to build meaningful communication through play, learning, and everyday interactions.

✨ Every attempt to communicate is worth noticing and celebrating.

What does ABA look like? 🌱

Sometimes, it looks like making a mummy. 👻

Activities like crafts can create natural opportunities for learning while keeping sessions fun, engaging, and meaningful for our learners.

During an activity like this, a child may have opportunities to practice skills such as following directions, requesting materials or help, making choices, waiting, fine motor skills, imitation, completing steps, and staying engaged with an activity.

The important part is that support is individualized. Every learner has different goals, so the skills being practiced may look different from child to child.

At Positive Behavior Steps, learning can happen in so many ways — sometimes with paper, glue, creativity, and a little Halloween fun. 💙🧡

This is what ABA can look like.

🧠 Behavior is communication — but what is it communicating?

One of the first questions we may ask when trying to understand a behavior is: What function is this behavior serving?

In ABA, behavior may occur to access attention, escape or avoid something, gain access to an item or activity, or because the behavior itself provides some type of sensory or automatic reinforcement.

It’s important to remember that we cannot determine the function of a behavior simply by looking at it. Two children can engage in the same behavior for completely different reasons — and even the same child’s behavior can serve different functions at different times.

Understanding the why helps us move beyond simply trying to stop a behavior and instead focus on teaching functional communication and meaningful replacement skills. 🌱

💬 What ABA topic would you like us to break down next?

🍂🐞 Cuddle Bug fun! Our learners took learning outside by collecting leaves, then brought their creativity indoors to turn them into adorable little bugs. Activities like this are a fun way to work on fine motor skills, following directions, participation, and creative play. 🎨🌿
