COSA at UCSF

COSA at UCSF The Community Outreach Student Alliance (COSA) is the umbrella organization that oversees 13 community service projects within the UCSF School of Pharmacy.

We currently have 14 student-run informational and screening projects dispersed across various school of pharmacy student organizations on campus. The leaders of each organization have decided to remove all the projects from individual organizations so they could be better managed by a board of representatives that will collaboratively work together to host more effective health-fairs and represen

t all organizations within the school of pharmacy. By removing the projects associated with each organization and forming an alliance, we hope to improve the quality of our projects and outreach efforts and promote more collaboration amongst the different RCOs on campus. COSA hopes to organize more large-scale and inter-professional health-fairs that will address the needs of under-served populations. We hope to provide quality patient-focused care, use our resources more effectively, and offer meaningful outreach experiences that further both personal and professional development. UCSF COSA is the umbrella organization that oversees 14 community service projects within the UCSF School of Pharmacy. Through these projects, we provide health screenings, disease-state management counseling, health education and workshops with a focus on helping the underserved and giving back to the community.

Project Healthy Heart aims to provide healthy heart services, such as blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, to communities in San Francisco. We also provide our community with the resources they need to improve their own health by educating them on how to prevent and manage common heart diseases, as well as on heart healthy habits.

Operation Diabetes/Project Nutrition focuses on helping the general public learn more about their overall health while finding ways to prevent/control chronic diseases such as diabetes. Operation Diabetes is a hands-on screening and awareness project recognized by APhA-ASP and the American Diabetes Association. Our goals consist of identifying populations at risk for diabetes and spreading knowledge to the public about the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of diabetes. Nutrition and health education play a huge role in diabetes and the management of other chronic diseases, therefore providing a route for Project Nutrition to intersect with our goals in Operation Diabetes. We hope to expand awareness by going to our local communities, parents, and schools to spread information on the various food groups and diets while explaining how they are attributable to overall health and conditions.

💊Project Brown Bag aims to optimize therapy by evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a patient's medication regimen and to identify potential health and medication issues, to reach out to underserved communities in San Francisco, and to provide clinical experience for pharmacy students.

💊🚮The Safe Medication Disposal Project aims to educate student pharmacists and the public about the importance of bringing unused or expired medications to designated drug take-back locations. Properly discarding medications and removing unused medications from homes reduces pharmaceutical contamination of water, pollution, and the chances of accidental drug overdoses/poisonings by children or family members.

Project Pediatrics is an informational project dedicated to supporting healthy and happy lifestyles of pediatric patients and families alike. We aim to educate the community about childhood immunizations, medication safety, and healthy lifestyle choices. Our events include the pediatric vaccination clinics, medication safety story times, holiday toy drives, and hands-on projects/fundraising for the Ronald McDonald House and the Koret Family Houses. The Pediatric Pharmacotherapy course elective is also offered each Spring in collaboration with Project Pediatrics. Through these rewarding activities, we hope to expand the scope of pediatric education at UCSF to improve care for our young patients!

Project Asthma strives to educate the general public about asthma and respiratory diseases by providing health information about the condition, triggers, and prevention strategies. As a project, we help people understand the prevalence of asthma and teach lifestyle modifications that can help their conditions. Furthermore, we are able to apply the knowledge gained in our first year of pharmacy school and demonstrate proper techniques of medication usage as well as teach adherence to healthcare providers and patients to improve quality of care.
