Among Plains Indian nations, counting coup represented the highest form of battlefield honor—a test of courage that valued bravery over bloodshed. Warriors earned prestige by touching enemies with hand, bow, or coup stick and escaping unharmed, demonstrating superiority through psychological dominance rather than killing. The practice required genuine risk; those who succeeded without injury earned greater respect than those wounded in the attempt. Each act was recorded through notches on coup sticks, eagle feathers, or painted images on ceremonial shirts that documented a warrior"s exploits.

The most prestigious coups involved direct contact with living enemies under dangerous conditions. Touching the first warrior to fall in battle, striking an enemy"s fortifications, or stealing horses tethered outside lodges all counted as legitimate acts of valor. Pacific Northwest tribes tied eagle feathers to coup sticks for each successful count, while Blackfoot warriors wore special shirts bearing coup bars on sleeves and shoulders. A warrior who counted coup typically earned the right to wear an eagle feather; if wounded during the act, he painted the feather red to acknowledge the cost of his courage.

These victories became part of tribal oral and visual histories, recounted during gatherings where warriors shared their battlefield experiences. The tradition emphasized tactical intelligence and personal courage over simple combat effectiveness. By forcing enemies to acknowledge defeat through intimidation rather than death, counting coup reduced casualties while still establishing clear hierarchies of bravery and skill among warriors.

The tradition extended remarkably into modern warfare. Joe Medicine Crow, a Crow Nation member serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, achieved the feat by disarming a German soldier in hand-to-hand combat and later stealing horses from an SS unit. His accomplishment demonstrated how deeply these warrior values persisted, even when Indigenous men fought in conventional military forces far from the Plains.

Counting coup reveals a sophisticated warrior culture that measured honor through controlled aggression and psychological mastery. Rather than glorifying violence, the practice channeled competitive instincts into demonstrations of courage that could be witnessed, verified, and commemorated. It remains one of the most distinctive martial traditions in North American history, reflecting values that prioritized personal bravery, strategic thinking, and community recognition over mere battlefield casualties.

Myrick’s cruelty wasn’t forgotten — and neither was the pain it caused.

The outcome wasn’t irony. It was retribution born from starvation, desperation, and injustice pushed too far. These are the parts of history people try to erase.

Remembering moments like this isn’t about revenge — it’s about truth. And truth matters.

The largest group of Native prisoners to be confined on Alcatraz Island were nineteen Hopi "hostiles."

Their crimes,
they opposed forced education of their children in government boarding schools. Including efforts to force them to farm. Both "offenses" were resistance to genocidal U.S. policies designed to erase Hopi language and religion.
They would be held at Alcatraz Island Penitentiary in January 1895.
Traveling by foot, horse, train and boat, Heevi"ima, Polingyawma, Masatiwa, Q"tsventiwa, Piphongva, Lomahongewma, Lomayestiwa, Yukiwma, Tuvehoyiwma, Patupha, Q"tsyawma, Sikyakeptiwa, Talagayniwa, Talasyawma, Nasingayniwa, Lomayawma, Tawalestiwa, Aqawsi, and Q"iwiso would arrive in San Francisco over a month later.
On Alcatraz they were to be, "...held in confinement, at hard labor, until . . . they shall show . . . they fully realize the error of their evil ways . . . until they shall evince, in an unmistakable manner, a desire to cease interference with the plans of the government for the civilization and education of its indian wards."

𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐃𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐞
Chief Dan George was actually a chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation in British Columbia, Canada from 1951 to 1963. Also an author and poet, George achieved his first acting job at the age of 60, appearing in the Canadian TV show, Caribou Country. But George’s acting career didn’t peak until 1970 when he starred in Little Big Man, a role for which he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Another great role for George was the part of Lone Watie in The Outlaw Josie Wales (1976), often considered one of the best American Westerns. And George’s performance in this American classic could be considered Oscar-worthy as well. George also appeared on TV shows such as Kung Fu. During George’s writing career, he was credited with fostering understanding between non-native and Native Americans, particularly with the release of his book, My Heart Soars
