Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is dedicated to opening access to outdoor adventure to under-resourced youth and people with disabilities of all ages. Our programs offer hands-on educational experiences designed to increase self-confidence, teach outdoor and leadership skills, and create a desire for continued personal challenge and life-long learn
ing. ETC trips also help participants develop an appreciation for the great outdoors, and inspire them to become environmental stewards. ETC’s signature programs are:
River Rafting Program (May - November): Based at ETC’s ecologically designed, accessible campground and education center on the banks of the South Fork American River, participants raft Class II and III rapids and learn about riparian ecology and river conservation. In the fall, ETC partners with South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) to guide educational salmon ecology trips on the South Yuba River. Sea Kayaking Program (April - November): People of all abilities learn paddling and safety skills while kayaking on beautiful San Francisco and Tomales Bays. As participants learn to paddle, they discover local fauna such as harbor seals and pelicans, and learn about the rich ecology and history of these habitats. Cross-Country Skiing Program (January - April): Participants explore the ski trails at Bear Valley Nordic Center, learn about the winter ecology, and delight in the wonder of the Giant Sequoias in Calaveras Big Trees. For many it is the first time they’ve experienced the joy and wonder of the snow. Youth LEAD Program (summer & school-year): At-risk teens (ages 14-18) participate in intensive 12- to 24-day outdoor adventure and education courses focused on building leadership and job-readiness skills, healthy living habits, and a stewardship ethic. For seven exceptional alumni, ETC offers an 8-month Fellowship Program that provides follow-up leadership training, outdoor skill development, mentorship, and job readiness training throughout the school year.
