What happens in the gut during the first year of life may be connected to how the brain develops.
A recent study followed babies from birth to age 3 and looked at three things together: epigenetic patterns present at birth, the developing gut microbiome, and later autism- and ADHD-related traits.
Researchers found that certain combinations of gut bacteria and epigenetic patterns were associated with neurodevelopmental differences later in childhood.
But this is the important part:
1. These findings show associations—not cause and effect.
2. They do not mean that specific bacteria cause or prevent autism or ADHD.
3. What they do show is how interconnected early development may be—across the gut microbiome, genetics, epigenetics, nutrition, immune function, and the environment.
