The Mid-Atlantic Black Farmers Market has launched a new initiative in Norfolk’s Berkley neighborhood to provide fresh, Black-grown produce directly to a community long recognized as a food desert.

Operating outside the Black-owned E. Palmer Supermarket through November, the market was founded by Thelonious Cook of the Mid-Atlantic Black Farmers Caucus and Navi Johnson of the RVA Black Farmers Market to bridge local food access gaps.

In Norfolk, where food insecurity impacts nearly 16% of residents and nearly a quarter of the city's children, the market offers fresh fruits, vegetables and artisan goods.

We were recently proud to donate $5,000 to the Playground Movement’s Food is Free Community Garden program as part of our Community Health and Community Benefit Initiative spring funding cycle!

In partnership with Bright Futures of Wisconsin, the Growing Access: Inclusive Community Garden & Life Skills Initiative expands an already established and growing community garden. It adds accessible raised garden beds designed for individuals with limited mobility, including those who may have difficulty bending, kneeling, or engaging with traditional ground-level garden spaces. These enhancements ensure that more community members can equitably participate in food production, skill-building, and community engagement.
