More than two new exam slots per production day: new data shows what a smarter clinical imaging workflow can do for practice capacity.

A multi-site pilot from Smile Doctors, one of the largest orthodontic support organizations in the U.S., examined what happens when practices replace traditional DSLR clinical photography with a workflow built around the iTero Lumina™ scanner and the Invisalign® Practice App.

Across 11 clinic locations, the results point to a meaningful shift in new patient exam capacity: Average new patient exam slots per production day increased from 12.98 to 15.00 after implementation¹ (That is an absolute gain of 2.02 slots per production day, a 15.3% relative increase.) Notably, 8 of 11 locations (72.7%) showed improvement.

For practices operating on tight margins, a capacity gain like this, achieved without adding staff or extending hours, is worth paying attention to. 👀

¹ Based on a retrospective, single-arm pre-post pilot evaluation conducted by Smile Doctors across 11 clinic locations in Virginia, Texas, Minnesota, and Georgia, comparing a DSLR baseline period (trailing 12-month average ending July 2024) to the post-implementation period with the iTero Lumina™ scanner and Invisalign® Practice App (September 2024–March 2025). Mixed effects model showed an increase of 2.024 new patient exam slots per production day (SE 0.881; p=0.0222; 95% CI 0.298–3.751). Results are based on a real-world pilot; outcomes may not be representative of all practices and individual results may vary. Full and partial denture scanning can be tough, even for experienced hands.

Dentures are some of the most challenging cases to capture digitally: wide edentulous arches, mobile soft tissue, and a lack of fixed anatomical landmarks can make it difficult to get a clean, accurate scan on the first pass.

Dr. Todd Davis, a Heartland Dental supported doctor Heartland Dental, shows just how manageable that workflow can be. In the video above, he walks through his approach to scanning for dentures using the iTero Lumina™ scanner, which offers a 3× larger field of view for capturing more surface area in a single pass,¹ and is designed to scan up to 2× faster than the iTero Element™ 5D imaging system.²

The industry’s benchmark for clinical photography just got a real challenger. ​

​For years, DSLR cameras have been considered the standard for clinical orthodontic photography. But a new clinical study set out to test that assumption, comparing a fully digital workflow using the iTero Lumina™ scanner and the Invisalign® Practice App against traditional DSLR photography, evaluated using American Board of Orthodontics criteria.​

​The results challenge a long-held view: experts found comparable overall image quality, with fewer capture steps and less dependence on dedicated equipment or assistants.¹​
