From the moment my son left the NICU, I made a promise to myself that I would love to pay it forward through donating breastmilk. I am so proud to say that I have been able to donate over 2,500 ounces to the Mother's Milk Bank of California.

At my 34 week appointment, I was diagnosed with preeclampsia and admitted to the hospital same day. This came as a huge surprise as my son and I had just completed a half marathon together the week prior and my pregnancy journey was fairly uneventful. I dreamed of being able to breastfeed right away, but as my son was so early, my milk needed a little time to come in.

During his first week of life NICU, we relied on donor milk for the first few days to ensure he was nourished. I am so grateful for the moms who came before with their donations to be able to feed my son. Once I was two months postpartum, I was medically cleared and able to donate so I could help other families and babies like ours to receive the best possible nutrition in their first days and months of life. This has truly been one of the greatest honors of my life.

Milk Warrior Candice shares: “Marshall and I are excited to share we’re making our first milk donation. When Marshall was born he had feeding difficulties. When he was two weeks old he was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. With his heart condition, difficulties with feeding is one of the main symptoms and struggles. As such, as we’ve been on this medical journey, it’s been my mission to keep up my supply so when his heart is repaired and healed and he’s able to consume more milk I will have it available.

A friend of mine told me about Mother’s Milk Bank after her stay in the NICU with her daughter. I’m so glad I can now share my breastmilk with other babies in need.”
