5 Common Piercing Mistakes
Mistake 1:
If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: avoid piercing guns.
This is the issue we troubleshoot or hear about every single day—often multiple times. Piercing guns are not sterile, they’re traumatic to the tissue, and they frequently lead to long-term complications.
Save yourself the stress, pain, and potentially huge medical bills.
Visit a professional piercer who uses safe, sterile, single-use needles.
•
Mistake 2:
We’re aware that a few manufacturers have made implant-grade versions of butterfly-back earrings. However, almost every butterfly back earring you’ll encounter is not implant grade. More importantly, the design itself harbors bacteria, is uncomfortable, and scratches the jewelry every time it’s installed or removed—compromising both the jewelry and the piercing.
The solution is simple: visit an APP Member studio and get pierced with flat backs in the proper length, gauge, and disk size for your anatomy.
•
Mistake 3:
Peroxide and alcohol are strong antiseptics—not aftercare products. They destroy healthy cells, slow healing, and often cause more irritation than the original issue.
Gentle, consistent aftercare like sterile saline wound wash is always best.
•
Mistake 4 & 5:
Mistake 4: Twisting your jewelry
Mistake 5: Touching or playing with your piercing
Both cause unnecessary trauma and introduce bacteria.
The solution is simple: leave it alone.
Our aftercare instructions are available anytime at slopiercing.com, and sterile saline wound wash solution is available at SLO Piercing.
