ABOUT US
Coast Allied Health Consulting and Education, Inc. is an outpatient pediatric OT clinic in San Luis Obispo, providing evaluations, direct therapy, and consultative services to children primarily ages 3–12, in both one-on-one and group settings.

Our therapists bring a combined 30+ years of pediatric experience, with advanced training in sensory integration and feeding. We specialize in supporting children impacted by trauma — helping them rebuild a sense of safety, competence, and connection — as well as children with developmental and learning differences, including Autism, ADHD, and sensory processing differences.

We're looking for therapists who want to make an incredible difference in their community, enjoy collaborating with others, and know how to have fun while doing meaningful work.

• Mentorship from experienced OTs, including hands-on support learning and administering evaluations
• Reduced paperwork burden through AI-assisted tools integrated with our EMR

• A true team approach to family communication, so no one therapist carries a case alone
• A culture built around preventing burnout and supporting quality of life — for both therapists and the families we serve

Body Scheme is the brain’s internal “map” of the body.

It refers to how a person perceives and understands their own body — where body parts are, how they move, and how they relate to each other. These sensory maps are built over time, primarily through movement, touch, proprioception, and real-life experience.

A well-developed body scheme allows actions to happen smoothly and automatically. A child can climb without constantly looking at their feet, sit upright without thinking about posture, use both hands together efficiently, or move through a crowded room without bumping into others.
When body scheme is less efficient, everyday tasks may feel harder.

A child may:
• Appear clumsy or bump into objects
• Struggle with dressing (finding sleeves, orienting clothes)
• Have difficulty imitating movements
• Avoid playground equipment
• Need to look at their hands to guide fine motor tasks

Because body scheme develops through active movement and sensory experience, it cannot be built through verbal instruction alone. It grows when children climb, crawl, push, pull, roll, balance, and explore their environment.

It explains why movement-based play is not “extra” — it is essential for building the brain’s understanding of the body.

A strong body scheme supports coordination, confidence, and participation in daily life.
