Scientists have identified what some researchers describe as a potential “third state” between life and death, where cells from deceased organisms can reorganize into entirely new living structures.
In a series of experiments, researchers found that death at the organism level does not always mean the immediate end of cellular activity.
When skin cells taken from deceased frog embryos were placed in a nutrient-rich environment, they spontaneously assembled into tiny living structures known as xenobots. These microscopic biobots were able to move, repair damage to themselves, and even reproduce in a novel way by gathering loose cells and forming new copies.
In similar experiments, human lung cells organized into structures called anthrobots, which demonstrated the ability to move through their environment and assist in repairing damaged nerve tissue under laboratory conditions.
Researchers say these findings reveal an unexpected degree of cellular plasticity—the ability of cells to adopt new functions and organize themselves in ways not observed within the original organism.
The discovery could have major implications for regenerative medicine. In the future, scientists hope that biobots created from a patient's own cells could potentially be used to deliver drugs, remove arterial blockages, assist tissue repair, or target diseased cells while avoiding immune rejection.
While these structures are not new organisms in the traditional sense, the research challenges conventional ideas about the boundaries between life and death by showing that living cells can retain surprising capabilities even after the organism they came from has died.
