Marin Center for Independent Living

Marin Center for Independent Living A disability non-profit organization promoting independence for people with disabilities.

The Marin Center for Independent Living (MCIL) was organized by a group of dedicated volunteers in 1979, following the world-changing movement for disability rights begun next door in Berkeley, CA in the 1960s. Independent Living history:
In the 1960s, Ed Roberts and several other quadriplegic students gained admission to the University of California Berkeley, began advocating for their rights and

building disability community, and the first curb cuts and ramps were born. In 1972 the first Center for Independent Living was founded by disability activists, led by Ed Roberts, in Berkeley. Ed Roberts went on to lead the Department of Rehabilitation in Sacramento, and Independent Living Centers began to proliferate from coast to coast. In California, twenty-eight counties have Independent Living Centers that are united in the powerful statewide organization, the California Foundation of Independent Living Centers. All of this was the precursor to the passage, a little over a decade later, of one of the most important pieces of social legislation in the history of the United States: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Organizers from MCIL's statewide program - the DO Network (Disability Organizing Network) - met in Sacramento this week to rally, educate, train, and strategize to create systems change in California over the next year. This network hub brings together the staff Systems Change Advocates from the 28 ILCs acros the state and their community members to work on organizing and advocacy campaigns to create "systems change" that increases access to community integration and inclusion for disabled persons and older adults.

We were joined by Rep. Jeff Gonzalez, father of an adult disabled child and disability advocate himself. He encouraged these advocates to keep telling their personal stories of lived experience to those who have the power to make decision and create change. His words "Data, tells, stories sell" is now the new chant of these advocates in this network. Check out the video below.

Big thanks to Sacramento's ILC Resources for Independent Living for being an awesome hometown host for this year's All Advocates Meeting!

We were proud to support disability community advocacy through our statewide program the DO Network (Disability Organizing Network) by sponsoring the CDLA Day of Action in Sacramento this week. Hundreds of disability advocates came from across the state to rally, get energized, be strengthened by their community and go meet with California legislators to tell their personal stories about the positive impacts that access to Home and Community Based Services like IHSS and healthcare have on their lives. Big thanks to our partners at Disability Rights California, Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF), California Foundation for Independent Living Centers, Canary Resistance, California Coalition for the Blind, Hand in Hand: The Domestic Employers Network, the State California State Council on Developmental Disabilities and many more making this happen and turning out advocates to march on the state capitol!

We had a powerful kick-off at the Capitol last year, let’s keep building power! On May 26, join us for the 2nd annual California Disability Leadership Alliance (CDLA) Day of Action at the Capitol! Rally for disability rights!

Together we will rally for disability rights and celebrate disability pride and power on the Capitol West Steps. During these difficult times, we need each other more than ever. We will demand affordable healthcare access, career and education support, physical and digital accessibility, and much more. The event also includes a resource fair, advocates and performers, and a space for the public to engage directly with their legislators. Nothing about us, without us!
