🤗Here are 3 great sensory – oral pre-feeding tasks!
These ideas are not meals.
They are activities that promote oral motor and swallowing skills to get ready for meals.
These techniques encourage jaw, stability, tongue and lip strength along with appropriate swallow activation for effective and safe progression of eating from purée to diced table food.
1. Allow babies 4-6 months of age to play with utensils so that they can get used to the feeling and holding them without the pressure of loading it up with food. You can add some scant flavors, food juices, or a little bit of purée so they can get used to licking and stripping taste off of the spoon.
2. Allow some baby led mouthing of foods that are held by adult adults that provide flavors without large chunks that could be a choking risk. Foods that I like to use include mango pits, carved corn, cobs, and savory juices from meats to introduce taste from the family table.
3. Allow oral motor play for chewing, licking, sucking and swallowing with cylinder shaped teething toys, and exercisers such as the mini biter. The Mini Biter can hold diced and frozen foods to allow safe and effective sensory oral play during pre-feeding, Baby Led Weaning food experiences and formal feeding – swallowing therapy.
