While Sunday nights aren’t for work, I’m allowed to remind those who know about changing your fixed point!

If you don’t, ask me about the

What if we think the other way around? 🤷‍♂️

Meet the quadratus plantae. 👋

It connects the calcaneus to the tendons of flexor digitorum longus (FDL).
The conventional description starts at the heel: quadratus plantae pulls on the FDL tendons, helping to straighten their oblique line of pull towards the toes.
Perfectly reasonable.

But what happens if we reverse the question?
During late stance in walking, the toes are extended and constrained by the ground while the heel rises above them.

So instead of asking:
What does quadratus plantae do to the FDL tendons?
ask:

What might the FDL tendons allow quadratus plantae to do to the calcaneus?

Now the same anatomy suggests another possibility.

The connection from the toes, through the FDL tendons and quadratus plantae to the heel, may help organise forces acting on the calcaneus as it moves over the forefoot.

Could quadratus plantae therefore contribute to the control and tracking of the calcaneus during heel rise? 👣

It's a functional hypothesis—but one that comes directly from looking at the same anatomy from the opposite direction.

Same muscle.
Same attachments.
Different direction of thinking.

Anatomy tells us what connects to what.

Understanding function requires us to ask what happens when those relationships meet the real world. 🎯

Sometimes understanding more begins by thinking the other way around.

Is anyone still interested in a Rolf Hike this year?

I only have a couple people asking for them so I was waiting to schedule. I feel like this fall would be a great time to do another one.

🚨BREAKING: A scientist in Japan demonstrated that the air inside a forest can strengthen your immune system for a full month.

Immunologist Qing Li of Nippon Medical School in Tokyo took 12 men on a three-day forest trip consisting of slow walks with no special breathing exercises or set routes.

Blood tests afterward showed a clear surge in natural killer cells — the immune cells that help the body fight viruses and cancerous cells.

The elevated levels were still measurable 30 days later.

A control group that walked the same distance through a city showed no change at all.

Pine, cedar, and cypress trees release airborne compounds called phytoncides as a natural defense. When people breathe them in, these compounds appear to activate immune cells.

Li’s research suggests that one forest walk a month may be enough to keep those cells elevated throughout the year.

Sometimes the best medicine does not require a prescription — just time among the trees.

😍Sound Bath with Jarek 😍 Sunday, Aug 9th • 4:00 PM
✨ It's time to get gonged. ✨

(We promise that's a good thing.)

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to take the world's best nap...without actually falling asleep?

Or maybe you do fall asleep. Honestly, that's between you and the gong. 😴

Join us for an immersive Sound Bath with Jarek, where you'll simply get comfortable while the rich, resonant sounds of crystal bowls and gongs wash over you. No yoga poses. No flexibility required. No awkward icebreakers. Your only job is to show up and exist.

Here's how it works:
✨ Find a comfy spot on the floor (or settle into a chair)
✨ Get cozy with blankets and pillows
✨ Close your eyes
✨ Let the waves of sound do their thing

People often leave feeling deeply relaxed, clear-headed, surprisingly refreshed, or like they just took the best mental vacation without ever leaving Sanford.

Think of it as a spa day for your nervous system...except nobody is trying to sell you cucumber water afterward. 🥒😉

Bring your favorite blanket, pillow, eye mask, fuzzy socks, or anything that helps you nest.

🎶 No experience needed.
🎶 No meditation skills required.
🎶 No wrong way to do it.

Just come curious.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Our yoga blocks have unionized.

Their demands include:
🧱 Better working conditions.
🧱 Fewer sweaty feet.
🧱 More appreciation.
🧱 At least one three-day weekend.

Frankly...they make some compelling arguments.

So we're granting everyone a little vacation.

🌈 Sanford Yoga & Community Center will be CLOSED July 2–6 so our instructors (and apparently our props) can rest, recharge, touch some grass, eat too many popsicles, and remember what it's like to sit down without saying, "Okay...one more deep breath."

Please don't make us come find you and remind you to:
💧 Drink water.
🧴 Wear sunscreen.
🍉 Eat something besides hot dogs.
😴 Take a nap.
❤️ Be kind to yourself.

(We'll do it. We have no boundaries.)

Meanwhile, Lindsey will be in Philly helping lead the Veterans Against Fascism march. So if you're watching CNN over the holiday weekend...look for the redhead. That's our fearless chaos coordinator. 👩‍🦰✊

As our country celebrates its 250th birthday, we hope you'll celebrate in whatever way feels most meaningful to you. Rest. Gather with people you love. Volunteer. Celebrate. Speak up. Unplug. Take care of yourself.

Because around here, we've always believed the strongest communities aren't built by people who never rest—they're built by people who take care of one another.

We'll see you back on Tuesday, July 7, well-rested, slightly sunburned, and ready to stretch, laugh, breathe, and continue creating the kind of community that reminds people they belong.

Happy Fourth, friends. 💙

P.S. If you hear a yoga block demanding paid vacation...mind your business.😜

✋YOUR BODY ISN’T BROKEN.
🧐IT’S COMPENSATING.

That shoulder pain?
Might actually be coming from your hip.

That tight lower back?
Could be your feet.

That neck tension that never fully goes away?
Your body may have been adapting around an old injury, stress pattern, surgery, accident, or imbalance for YEARS.

And if you’ve already tried:
• stretching
• massage
• chiropractic work
• injections
• pain meds
• physical therapy
• or even surgery…

…without lasting relief, your body may not need MORE force.

It may need a different approach.

At Freedom Rolfing, Mike works with the body as an interconnected system — not just a collection of isolated pain points.

Think:
👉 fascia work
👉 nervous system retraining
👉 movement education
👉 structural alignment
👉 long-term ease and mobility

Sessions are typically 75 minutes and highly individualized. Sometimes the work happens directly where the pain is. Sometimes it doesn’t — because the source of the problem is often somewhere else entirely.

The goal isn’t to “crack” you into place.

The goal is to help your body stop fighting itself.

✔ Move with less pain
✔ Breathe easier
✔ Improve mobility
✔ Reduce chronic tension
✔ Feel more stable and grounded in your own body

Mike’s Sanford office is consistently booked, and he is now seeing clients in Cary Tuesday–Thursday.

If your body has been asking for help for a while now…this may be your sign to finally listen.
