Healthy balance is a key aspect of holistic wellness, and it extends to all areas of our lives. There is a lot of misunderstanding of this balance, even by trained psychologists and nutritionists.
Nutritionists tell you to eat healthy all the time, they don't show the "cheat" meals and days. Holistic nutrition includes understanding the need for a balance of flavors, textures, and nutritional ingredients. This means sometimes, rarely, to treat yourself with "empty" calories is perfectly fine as long as you maintain the balance.
Exercise nuts plan 7 day exercises and never show days where they just relax or do nothing. Holistic exercise includes down days for recovery, activities you can do while tired, sick, or unable to get to your normal exercise routine, so that you maintain a balance.
Relationship psychologists tell you that it's not right for both people to pursue inter relationship goals and time together while also pursuing intra relationship goals because they are focused on one or the other. Some see having individual goals and time spent away from a partner as selfish, even defining it as narcissistic. Holistic relationships include being present and giving all you can while you are together, while giving yourself time to pursue personal growth and goals that may or may not include your partner.
While apart, it's perfectly fine to send heartfelt notes and let that person know you miss them. What's not fine is to guilt the other or feel guilty for needing to spend time balancing your life with other aspects such as reading, exercising, meditation, working on personal projects or spending some time with other friends, loved ones or even alone.
Everything in balance is holistic living. What do you think? I'd love to know your thoughts.
