Another study from my PhD just came out!

Predicting daily recovery during long‐term endurance training using machine learning analysis - a study that looked to predict daily recovery using training metrics, diet, sleep, HRV, and subjective well-being.

Coaches and athletes commonly measure so many things, what actually matters most to inform recovery? I had 55 athletes record everything for 12 weeks (3572 days of tracking). In short, a small subset of variables provide most of the predictive power at the group level.

At the individual level, predictive accuracy varies greatly as do the variables with the most predictive power. However once you find them for each athlete, a small subset of variables offers similar predictive capability as the full dataset.

Of interest to the machine learning folks, the LASSO model outperformed all of the fancier ones at the group level. For individuals the winners were LASSO: 30%, SVM: 30%, XGBoost: 23%, Light GBM: 12%, KNN: 4%, Ridge: 1%, and MARS: 0.4% of models.

Future research in single-sport athletes would allow additional load metrics like HR, total work, or distance to be more easily factored in. Also energy availability, alcohol intake, and menstrual cycle tracking could be helpful metrics to include.

We are about a week away from the start of Daylight Saving Time in the US. That time change, obviously, means that we "lose" an hour of sleep. Fortunately, this is mostly a transient issue, since our biological clocks eventually recalibrate to the new schedule.

However, many of us are stuck in a chronic state of social jet lag — meaning that our biological clocks are constantly misaligned with the time when we are required to be awake and alert. This leads to a pervasive reduction in overall sleep year-round, which is accompanied by a host of acute performance decrements and potentially some long-term health issues.

One group in whom this has been studied extensively is students. Students are an apt model because they generally have strict schedules forcing them to wake up earlier, and because adolescents tend to have a delayed circadian phase that drives them to fall asleep later. This is obviously a recipe for inadequate slumber, and it likely has grim implications for their grades, as you'll see in the two new studies described within. Hi all,

A while back I posted about a survey I was conducting looking at the pre-exercise nutrition habits of endurance athletes. I want to thank everyone who filled it out and/or shared it. Nearly 2,000 athletes ended up completing the survey, and the results have now been published in two journal articles.

I made a short video talking about some of the key findings.

Overall, a lot of athletes perform fasted training (~63%), males perform fasted training more than females, people following low-carb or periodized-carb diets perform more fasted training than those following other dietary patterns, and many people perform fasted training because they think it helps their training, while others avoid fasted training because they do not think it helps their training. Also, fewer than half of athletes vary their pre-exercise nutrition choices based on workout duration, workout intensity, or mode of workout and nearly all factors measured relating to pre-exercise nutrition intake vary by s*x, competitive level, and/or habitual dietary pattern.

Hi all! This is the final day of this survey and we would love to get as many responses as possible! As part of my PhD that I’m doing with Dr. Dan Plews looking at pre-exercise nutrition, we are trying to better understand how endurance athletes fuel prior to workouts. If you haven't already, would you mind filling out an anonymous 10-min survey about what you eat before workouts? Would be very much appreciated!

For the first part of my PhD project we are trying to better understand how endurance athletes, of all levels, fuel prior to workouts. If you perform regular endurance-type training and have ever competed in any type of organized event, I would be so appreciative if you could participate in my research by filling out an anonymous 10-min online survey about what you eat before workouts!
