We offer an environment that we believe someone who is struggling with drugs and/or alcohol needs in order to develop a healthy lifestlye. We have developed a structure and set of guidelines that our house rules are comprised of that help give each resident a sense of responsibility and accountability. These guidelines are the foundation and necessary tools that we believe will help every individual resident remain clean and sober, while living a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise doesn't just tone the body — it can actually rewire the brain.

It's called neuroplasticity: the same mechanism that lets the brain adapt to addiction also lets it adapt to healthy new habits. Regular cardio has been shown to improve memory and reduce cravings. Group exercise builds accountability and belonging on top of the physical benefits. Even 30 minutes a day, structured into the routine, gives early recovery something addiction took away: a reason to get up and something to look forward to.

At Pura Vida, that's shown up as everything from group hikes to wakeboarding and rock climbing through our recreational therapy programming. Joy for Living, one workout at a time.

Physical exercise is just one of the many ways Pura Vida is helping to rebuild a Joy for Living in our clients. Call today or visit our website to learn more.

Accreditation isn't just a badge on a website. It's what tells you a treatment center is actually held to a standard.

Pura Vida is accredited by The Joint Commission — the same national quality body that accredits hospitals — and licensed by California's Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Neither of those happens by accident, and neither is a one-time achievement; both require ongoing compliance, regular review, and real clinical standards behind the scenes.

When you're choosing a treatment center for yourself or someone you love, ask about accreditation. It's one of the clearest signals of legitimacy in an industry where marketing can otherwise say almost anything.

Addiction doesn't happen to "certain types of people." Drugs and alcohol are addictive by their chemical nature, they affect anyone regardless of profession, income, or personality, though some circumstances, like growing up around substance use, do raise the risk.

Alcohol is the third-leading cause of preventable death in the United States, and alcohol-related deaths rose 25% during the pandemic in 2020 alone. Among people under 65, that death rate actually surpassed COVID deaths for the same age group. Ma*****na can absolutely cause dependence and withdrawal, including mood swings, insomnia, and irritability, and willpower alone is insufficient to avoid these side-effects.Addiction changes the parts of the brain responsible for impulse control and executive function, not just motivation.

We hear these misconceptions constantly, and they all point the same direction: toward waiting, minimizing, or trying to white-knuckle something that needs real treatment. Evidence-based care works, even after a relapse, even after multiple attempts. That's not optimism. That's what the data shows.

If you're even beginning to think there's a problem, that's already enough of a reason to reach out for help. Our team can help you determine what resources are right for your situation and connect you to care that fits your clinical and financial needs — even if it's not with Pura Vida. Screenings & recommendations are always free, confidential, and individualized to you. Call today.

Meet our team: Jenny Sederholm, LCSW — Primary Therapist

Jenny has spent over 18 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, supporting individuals and families through some of the hardest chapters of their lives — including her own recovery journey, which shapes how she shows up for clients here.

In her own words: “I feel honored to both walk alongside people as they navigate substance use and addiction, as well as celebrate them as they embrace sobriety & lasting recovery. I am so deeply grateful to be part of such a compassionate and collaborative team here at Pura Vida.”

Relapse doesn't happen all at once. It happens in three stages, and the earlier you catch it, the easier it is to interrupt.

Emotional relapse comes first: bottling up feelings, skipping meetings, isolating, poor sleep and eating, usually with no conscious thought of using yet. Left unaddressed, it can slide into mental relapse: fantasizing about using, romanticizing old friends or places, minimizing the risk, even scheming ways to "use safely." Only the final stage, physical relapse, is the part most people picture when they hear the word.

If you catch yourself in that mental-relapse stage, a few techniques actually help: 1. Play the tape through. Imagine what really happens after you use, not just the first five minutes.
2. Reach out to someone before you act on it, and wait it out. Most urges peak and pass within 15 to 30 minutes if you can distract yourself through them.

Relapse rates for addiction sit around 40-60%, comparable to relapse rates for other chronic diseases like hypertension. That's not a life sentence. It's a signal to reevaluate the plan.

If you or a loved one has had a lapse or relapse in their recovery journey, we're here to help. Call our skilled admissions team to be connected with the right resources for your needs, even if it's not with us.

This is what it looks like when a community comes together in the name of public health, education, fighting stigma, and saving lives.

Micah & MIchelle Sawyer have done an astounding job cultivating a genuine spirit of hope, togetherness, and purpose from a foundation of unimaginable tragedy. Their organization, Micah's Hugs, named in their son's memory, provides Narcan training, fentanyl test strips, and overdose education around the country. Their work has saved countless lives already, and with their tenacious outreach and relational approach to building awareness on this difficult subject, they will undeniable save countless more.

Every loss from drug overdose & addiction is a strike against our shared humanity and we cannot allow our grief to make us silent. Yesterday at Micah's Hugs' Food Not Fentanyl event, we celebrated the memories of those we’ve lost by sharing food, music, and community resources. In this way, we show the world what life can be when we stop letting fear, ignorance, guilt, and shame hold us back.

Pura Vida is all about fostering a Joy for Living in recovery and this event was the living embodiment of that philosophy. We are so honored for the opportunity to attend and for the astonishing accomplishments and continuing collaboration with Micah's Hugs, who have provided tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship funding for our Sober Living residents!

Thank you Micah & Michelle! You guys are a force of nature in this community!

Pura Vida opened its first sober living home in 2015. Over ten years, and thousands of transformed lives later, we are a thriving full-continuum treatment hub at the heart of Sonoma County's recovery community.

How did we get here? The answer may surprise you. It wasn't luxurious resort-style amenities, it wasn't flashy pop-psychology buzz words — just a guiding belief that recovery works better rooted in community, accountability, and fun! That idea hasn't changed since day one. Our skilled counselors, therapists, and staff have built countless futures on that premise and we look forward to keeping that momentum going for many decades to come!

Enabling doesn't just affect the person with the addiction. It reshapes the whole family.

When one person takes on the role of "the one who smooths things over," the rest of the family often reorganizes around it — the Hero who overachieves to compensate, the Scapegoat who absorbs the blame, the Lost Child who disappears rather than add to the chaos, the Mascot who jokes to keep the peace, the Caretaker who does the actual enabling. None of these are conscious choices. They're survival strategies.

Enabling is common for reasons that make sense on their own: a parent trying to protect a child, a codependent relationship where both people get something out of the dynamic, or guilt over believing the addiction is somehow the family's fault. Over time, many enablers come to believe their loved one would be in jail or worse without their help — which only cements the pattern further.

The way out isn't tough love or punishment — it's boundaries. Boundaries aren't about being mean; they're about letting someone feel the real consequences of their choices instead of shielding them from it, and about the rest of the family getting their own life back too. Families who get support tend to see better outcomes for the person in treatment, as well.

Some of the most honest conversations in early recovery happen over a cutting board, not in a therapy chair.

Our cooking classes aren't about becoming a chef — they're about relearning ordinary structure: showing up on time, working alongside other people, finishing something you started, and then sitting down to actually eat it together. For a lot of clients, that's the first "normal" evening they've had in a long time.

Joy for Living, one shared meal at a time.

Recovery doesn't end at graduation — and neither does our relationship with our clients.

Pura Vida's free-for-life alumni program helps keep graduates connected and rooted in community long after their time with us is complete. Alumni speaker panels, sober fun outings, and alumni cookouts are just a few of the ways we help carry forward our mission of Joy in Recovery, well past the day someone leaves treatment.

Community doesn't stop mattering once treatment does. Call to learn more about how our alumni program works.
