While California is currently screwworm-free, recent detections in Texas and Mexico mean it’s time to stay vigilant!

Unlike common houseflies, screwworm flies lay eggs on open wounds of living animals (pets, horses, livestock, and newborns). Eggs hatch within 24 hours into larvae that burrow into healthy tissue.

What to watch for:
⚠️ Scratches, bites, or wounds that rapidly worsen
⚠️ Visible maggots or white eggs in/around wounds
⚠️ Unpleasant odor or extreme licking, biting, and discomfort

3 Ways to Protect Your Pets:
1️⃣ Clean & cover wounds: Treat scrapes, bites, and surgical sites right away.
2️⃣ Stay protected: Keep up with veterinarian-approved flea, tick, and fly preventatives.
3️⃣ Check daily: Inspect traveling animals and newborn umbilical sites regularly.

🚨 What to do if you suspect screwworm:
* DO NOT flush maggots or throw them in the trash!
* DO collect a sample from deep within the wound and seal it in 70% rubbing alcohol.
* CALL YOUR VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY. Screwworm is a reportable condition, and quick action is crucial.

🚨 HEAT ADVISORY: Keep Your Pets Safe! 🐾☀️

It’s dangerously hot out there! Our pets can’t sweat like humans do, which means they are incredibly vulnerable to heat stroke. With a few simple precautions, we can keep those tails wagging safely all summer long.

Here is your essential pet safety checklist:

❌🚗 NEVER leave your pet in a parked car! Even on an 85° day with the windows cracked, a car's interior can hit a scorching 100° in less than 10 minutes. ⏰🐕 Time your walks. Avoid exercising during the hottest parts of the day. Stick to early mornings or late evenings, and shorten your routes until the heatwave passes. 💦🏡 Hydrate & Chill. Make sure they have constant access to fresh water and deep shade. On extreme heat days, keep them indoors with the AC or fans running – especially if they are older, overweight, or have flat faces/breathing issues!

⚠️ KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS ⚠️ Watch out for excessive panting, rapid heart rate, weakness, confusion/wobbliness, vomiting, or diarrhea.

🏥 What to do: If you suspect heat stroke, start cooling them down by wetting them with room-temperature water (not ice cold!) and using a fan. Contact your veterinary office immediately. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency!

🚨 URGENT ALERT FOR BAY AREA PET PARENTS 🚨

Please be on the lookout! There is currently an active bloom of highly toxic Amanita mushrooms (often known as "Death Caps" or "Destroying Angels") in California.

There have been increased reports of life-threatening Amanita toxicosis cases in dogs. These mushrooms are incredibly dangerous and can cause severe liver failure if ingested.

What you need to do: 🍄 Inspect your yard daily and remove any wild mushrooms immediately. 🐕 Keep dogs on a short leash during hikes and walks, especially in wooded/damp areas. 🏥 If you suspect your pet has eaten a wild mushroom, do not wait for symptoms. Seek emergency veterinary care IMMEDIATELY.
