Yes! Crawling is an important developmental milestone that babies should not skip, but it’s not just hands and knees crawling that is important. Both army crawling AND hands & knees crawling are important and have different purposes.
Babies who skip belly crawling or hands and knees crawling are more likely to have reflexes that haven’t integrated fully. While baby may still get to walking with no problem, unintegrated infant reflexes can lead to many challenges later on.
As a pediatric OT, unintegrated infant reflexes are the most consistent underlying motor problem I see when working with school age children with ADHD, Autism and learning challenges.
The brain is built by movement and all the motor milestones have a purpose!
