When Psychologist Norbet Mintz joined the Harvard Medical School as a professor, the first thing he ordered was to have the color of his office changed❗️
For many it’s a surprise that why would an academic/scientist care about the colors on his wall. He has much important things to focus on 🤔
But Mintz knew that for him to be highly productive, to have the right mindset and be enthusiastic about his work, he had to be in the right environment.
Mintz and Abraham Maslow (remember Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?) had researched and conducted experiments on the impact of environment on behavior and mood.
Most people who even know that their environment needs an update, put the task on the back burner.
They say that they are busy and they have so much to tackle and they are unable to manage it all.
They keep complaining and complaining.
But don’t pause to look around them.
Don’t take the action to fix their surroundings.
“I’ll do it once I have that job.”
“I’ll do it once I have that promotion.”
“I’ll do it once I own a home.”
“I’ll do it once my business takes off.”
“Once I have all my ducks in a row, then I’ll think about my environment.”
They have actually gotten it backwards. It works the other way round.
To prosper in other parts of life, you first want to be in a space that is nurturing and supporting.
The problem is that the society is conditioned us to believe that design is all about aesthetics and a nice thing to have but not a necessity.
Where as in reality, aesthetics is only the external factor of design, the internal factor is that your physical surroundings impact your feelings, emotions, thoughts and behaviors at a subconscious level. Whether you are aware of it or not 🤷♀️
So take a moment and look around you. The spaces where you spend your days and night, are they a reflection of future goals ?
