National Accreta Foundation

National Accreta Foundation Amplifying the experience of those impacted by accreta to improve quality of care & patient outcomes. Every mom deserves risk-appropriate obstetric care.

Preventing cases of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity attributable to placenta accreta means looking upstream and preventing medically unindicated c-sections. Making this a reality requires increasing awareness of accreta, advocating for moms and babies, and connecting patients & providers with resources to help improve quality of care. We are focusing our efforts in the following areas to make birth safer for all moms: Awareness, Advocacy and Resources.

As Maternal Mental Health Month comes to a close, we’re circling back to important findings from the “Patient-centered Care for Placenta Accreta Spectrum” study conducted by researchers at the National Maternity Hospital in Ireland (2025).

The study — which included participation from members of the accreta community — highlighted ongoing gaps in postpartum and mental health support for PAS families:
• Only 44% were offered mental health support
• Many said support came too late
• Partners often felt overwhelmed and unsupported

These findings reinforce the need for more trauma-informed, patient-centered care before, during, and long after delivery.

We are grateful to the researchers for helping bring greater visibility to the lived experiences of PAS survivors and families — and to every community member who shared their story to help move care forward. 💚

May is Hysterectomy Awareness Month. 💚

For many families affected by Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS), hysterectomy is not elective — it is emergency, life-saving care.

Did you know?
✨ About 1 in 3 women in the U.S. will have a hysterectomy by age 60.
✨ Most PAS patients have hysterectomies because they have no other option.
✨ Hysterectomies are not only performed because of cancer. Conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, severe bleeding, and pregnancy complications like PAS can also lead to hysterectomy.

At the National Accreta Foundation, we recognize the physical and emotional impact hysterectomy can have on our community. This month, we honor every story, every scar, every loss, and every life saved.

You are not alone. 💚

May is Maternal Mental Health Month — and it’s an important reminder that behind every high-risk pregnancy is not just a physical battle, but an emotional one too.

For families impacted by Placenta Accreta Spectrum (PAS), the experience can include intense fear, uncertainty, and lasting mental health challenges like PTSD, anxiety, and depression — both during pregnancy and long after delivery.

Support matters. If you are facing accreta, know someone who is, or are a survivor, we have resources to help and support groups dedicated to accreta here : https://www.preventaccreta.org/support

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a serious and growing pregnancy complication.

The leading risk factor?
A prior cesarean.

With each additional cesarean, the risk increases—raising the chance of accreta which includes:
• Severe hemorrhage
• Emergency delivery
• Hysterectomy

Not all cesareans are avoidable—and many are life-saving.
But understanding how cesarean history impacts future pregnancy risk is critical to improving outcomes.

At NAF, we focus on awareness, education, and prevention.

Informed, evidence-based decisions help improve maternal outcomes—today and in future pregnancies.

A major national spotlight is on cesarean overuse and downstream impacts including placenta accreta spectrum. .

The New York Times published a powerful multi-part investigation (if you missed it in November 2025) examining:
• Why cesarean rates remain high
• How current practices may be driving unnecessary surgeries
• And how this is contributing to the rise in placenta accreta

Cesareans save lives—and they should always be there when needed.

But they are also major surgery, and many may be avoidable.

Why this matters:
Each cesarean increases the risk of complications in future pregnancies, including placenta accreta.

We can hold both truths:
💛 Life-saving care
⚠️ The need for appropriate use

This is about informed, patient-centered care.
