💙 “Sorry for crying.”
💙 “Sorry for needing love.”
💙 “Sorry for reacting.”
💙 “Sorry for being too much.”

Many adults who constantly apologize for their emotions aren’t simply being polite—they may be carrying deeply ingrained beliefs that were formed in childhood.

Research shows that when children repeatedly experience punishment, rejection, criticism, or emotional invalidation, they often develop negative core beliefs about themselves and their emotions. Over time, these beliefs can become automatic and unconscious:

❌ “My feelings are a problem.”
❌ “I’m too sensitive.”
❌ “My needs don’t matter.”
❌ “I have to keep everyone happy to be safe.”

In cases of complex developmental trauma, these beliefs are often stored alongside emotionally charged memories and continue influencing thoughts, emotions, relationships, and behavior long after the original experiences have ended.

This is where EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can be incredibly powerful.

EMDR is an evidence-based trauma treatment recognized by organizations including the American Psychological Association, the World Health Organization, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Research has demonstrated EMDR’s effectiveness in reducing trauma symptoms and helping individuals process distressing experiences that remain “stuck” in the nervous system.

For individuals with complex developmental trauma, EMDR can help identify and reprocess the memories and experiences connected to deeply rooted negative cognitions such as:

• “I’m not good enough.”
• “I’m unlovable.”
• “I’m too much.”
• “My emotions are dangerous.”

As these experiences are reprocessed, healthier and more adaptive beliefs can emerge:

✨ “My emotions are valid.”
✨ “I am worthy of love and connection.”
✨ “I can express my needs.”
✨ “I am enough.”

At Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxiety, we integrate EMDR with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) because lasting healing often requires both processing the past and building skills for the present.

While EMDR addresses the underlying trauma and negative self-beliefs, DBT teaches practical skills for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Together, these evidence-based approaches help clients understand the origins of their struggles, heal the wounds beneath them, and develop the tools necessary to create meaningful, lasting change.

We are proud to have four EMDR-trained clinicians on our team, allowing us to provide specialized trauma treatment within a comprehensive DBT-informed program designed specifically for individuals struggling with trauma, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and the effects of complex developmental trauma.

You don’t have to spend your life apologizing for being human.

Your emotions were never the problem.

Healing is possible. 💙

Borderline Personality Disorder is not a character flaw. It’s a treatable mental health condition.

Unfortunately, people living with BPD are often labeled as “manipulative,” “attention-seeking,” or “too difficult.” The reality is far more complex—and far more hopeful.

Research shows that Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by intense emotional sensitivity, difficulty regulating emotions, fears of abandonment, relationship instability, impulsivity, and chronic feelings of emptiness. Many individuals with BPD also have histories of trauma, invalidating environments, or adverse childhood experiences.

One of the biggest myths about BPD is that it is “untreatable.” That simply isn’t true.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan specifically for BPD, is one of the most researched and effective treatments available. Studies consistently show that DBT can reduce self-harm, suicidal behaviors, emotional dysregulation, crisis service utilization, and psychiatric hospitalizations while improving overall functioning and quality of life.

At Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxiety, our Outpatient Primary Mental Health DBT Daily Contact Programming provides a higher level of support than traditional weekly therapy alone. Through daily therapeutic contact, skills coaching, and individualized treatment planning, patients receive consistent support while learning how to navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

Our program goes beyond traditional therapy by incorporating:

🎯 Case Management Services – Helping patients coordinate care, access resources, navigate life stressors, and build a stronger foundation for recovery.

🎨 Art Therapy Groups – Using creative expression and mindfulness-based activities to increase self-awareness, emotional regulation, and present-moment focus.

🚶 Behavioral Activation – Encouraging meaningful activities, movement, social connection, and healthy routines that naturally increase mood-enhancing neurotransmitters and help break cycles of depression, avoidance, and isolation.

🧘 Mindfulness – Learning to stay present without judgment.

🌊 Distress Tolerance – Managing emotional crises without making situations worse.

❤️ Emotion Regulation – Understanding and responding to emotions more effectively.

🤝 Interpersonal Effectiveness – Building healthier relationships, boundaries, and communication skills.

We understand that many individuals with BPD have spent years feeling misunderstood, judged, or told they are “too much.” The truth is that what often appears as difficult behavior is frequently a person doing their best to cope with overwhelming emotional pain.

The most important thing to know: People with BPD can and do recover. With the right treatment, support, and skills, patients can build emotional stability, meaningful relationships, and lives they are proud to live.

When we replace judgment with understanding, treatment works. Healing is possible.

🥊 Behavioral Activation in Action: Building Momentum, Finding Strength, Taking Control 🥊

At Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxiety, healing doesn’t only happen in the therapy room—it happens through meaningful action, connection, and experiences that help patients re-engage with life.

This week, our Behavioral Activation Group stepped into the ring for a boxing experience that challenged participants physically, mentally, and emotionally. Through movement, skill-building, and teamwork, patients practiced taking action even when anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms, or emotional overwhelm might tell them to withdraw.

Behavioral Activation is an evidence-based treatment approach that helps individuals break cycles of avoidance, isolation, and inactivity by intentionally engaging in activities that align with their values and goals. Research has shown that physical activity—including boxing and other structured exercise—can help reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and stress while improving emotional regulation, self-efficacy, and overall well-being.

From a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) perspective, boxing provides a powerful opportunity to practice several core skills:

🥊 Opposite Action – Choosing movement and engagement when emotions urge withdrawal or avoidance.

🥊 Distress Tolerance – Building the ability to stay present and effective during physical and emotional discomfort.

🥊 Mindfulness – Remaining focused on the moment, breath, body awareness, and technique.

🥊 Emotion Regulation – Releasing energy in a healthy way while developing mastery, confidence, and resilience.

For many individuals recovering from trauma, anxiety, depression, and other high-acuity mental health challenges, experiences like these create opportunities to reconnect with their bodies, build confidence, and experience success in real time.

A huge thank you to Classen Boxing and The Cycle Studio for their partnership, support, and collaboration in helping create meaningful therapeutic experiences for our patients. We are grateful for community partners who share our commitment to healing, growth, and recovery.

💙 Build momentum. Find strength. Take control.

🖤 Why Information Feels Safe After Trauma

“Trauma survivors often need as much information about a current situation as possible.”

To someone who hasn’t experienced trauma, asking lots of questions or needing constant reassurance may seem excessive. But for many trauma survivors, uncertainty can feel threatening because their nervous system learned that unpredictability often came with danger.

When you’ve lived through experiences where things felt out of your control, gathering information becomes a way to create safety, reduce anxiety, and regain a sense of stability.

🌊 At Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxiety, we help people understand that these responses aren’t weaknesses—they’re adaptive survival strategies developed in response to overwhelming experiences.

Evidence-Based Facts About Trauma

🔹 Trauma changes the brain’s threat detection system.
Research shows trauma can increase activity in the amygdala (the brain’s alarm center), making people more sensitive to potential threats and uncertainty.

🔹 Uncertainty can activate the same stress response as danger.
Studies have found that individuals with trauma histories often experience heightened anxiety when situations feel unpredictable or unclear because their brains are working overtime to anticipate risk.

🔹 Trauma affects the nervous system, not just memories.
Trauma is stored not only as thoughts and memories but also through physiological responses. This is why survivors may feel “on edge” even when they logically know they are safe.

🔹 Hypervigilance is a common trauma response.
Many survivors become highly attuned to their environment, constantly scanning for information and potential threats. This is the nervous system’s attempt to prevent future harm.

🔹 Healing involves helping the brain relearn safety.
Trauma-focused therapies can help reduce hypervigilance, improve emotional regulation, and teach the nervous system that uncertainty does not always equal danger.

💙 If you find yourself needing details, reassurance, or a clear plan before you can relax, know that your nervous system may be trying to protect you the best way it knows how.

Healing doesn’t mean forcing yourself to tolerate uncertainty overnight. It means gradually building enough internal and external safety that uncertainty no longer feels like a threat.

🐾🧩 ANIMAL ASSISTED PLAY THERAPY 🧩🐾

At Beachside Behavioral Health Services, we believe healing happens through connection.

For many children, talking about big feelings, anxiety, trauma, or difficult experiences can feel overwhelming. That’s why we integrate evidence-based play therapy with the powerful human-animal bond.

Research shows that Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) can improve social-emotional functioning, increase engagement in treatment, reduce anxiety, and support emotional regulation in children and adolescents.

Play Therapy is one of the most widely researched therapeutic approaches for children. Through play, children communicate experiences, emotions, and needs in ways that often feel safer and more natural than words alone.

When combined, Animal Assisted Play Therapy creates a unique environment where children can:

💙 Build trust and emotional safety
🧩 Learn through play and exploration
💙 Strengthen emotional regulation skills
🐾 Practice social connection and communication
💙 Increase confidence and self-expression

Sometimes healing starts with a game, a smile, a wagging tail, and a safe relationship.

At Beachside Behavioral Health Services, we’re committed to helping children and families Rewrite Their Story.

💙 Emotional wellness isn’t about “staying positive” all the time.

It’s about building the ability to move through life with flexibility, courage, connection, and self-compassion.

At Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxiety, we believe healing starts with meeting yourself where you are — not where you think you “should” be.

Research shows that psychological flexibility — the ability to stay present, accept difficult emotions, and still act according to your values — is strongly associated with lower anxiety, reduced depression, greater resilience, and healthier relationships.

Studies also show that emotional avoidance and suppression can actually increase distress over time, while learning to acknowledge emotions with openness improves long-term wellbeing.

That’s why the foundation of healing often looks like:

🖤 Gentle acceptance
🌊 Compassion
⏰ Healthy routine
🤝 Connection
⚓ Courage
🔄 Resetting when needed
✨ And eventually… wisdom

You do not have to “fix” yourself to deserve peace.
Healing begins when you stop fighting your humanity and start working with it.

🖤💙 DBT SKILL SPOTLIGHT: OPPOSITE ACTION 💙🖤

Sometimes our emotions tell us to isolate, lash out, avoid, or shut down. But when emotions don’t fit the facts — or acting on them makes things worse — there’s a powerful DBT skill that can help: Opposite Action.

Instead of following the emotional urge, you intentionally choose a behavior that moves you toward healing, connection, and effectiveness.

✨ Feeling anxious? → Take one small step toward what you’re avoiding.
✨ Feeling sad? → Get active and connect with others.
✨ Feeling angry? → Speak gently instead of attacking.
✨ Feeling envy? → Practice gratitude and kindness.

Research in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) shows that changing behavior can directly influence emotional states. Studies have found that behavioral activation and exposure-based strategies — both forms of “opposite action” — can significantly reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and avoidance behaviors. The brain learns through action, and repeated healthy behaviors can help rewire emotional responses over time.

🧠 Evidence-Based Facts:
• Behavioral activation is an empirically supported treatment for depression and improves mood by increasing meaningful activity.
• Gradual exposure is one of the most effective evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders.
• DBT skills training has been shown in research to reduce emotional reactivity, impulsive behaviors, self-destructive coping, and interpersonal conflict.
• Neuroplasticity research demonstrates that repeated intentional behaviors can strengthen healthier emotional pathways in the brain.

Healing doesn’t mean never feeling difficult emotions. It means learning how to respond to them effectively.

At Beachside Recovery Center for Trauma + Anxiety, we help clients build practical, evidence-based skills that create lasting emotional change.

🎶 There’s something powerful about watching patients let their guard down, pick up an instrument, and simply be present in the moment.

This week for Experiential Therapy Group, both our adult and adolescent groups participated in Music Therapy, learning the ukulele together. From practicing simple chords to sharing laughter and encouraging one another, patients experienced how music can become a powerful tool for connection, self-expression, and healing. 🖤

Research shows that music therapy can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and trauma-related stress by lowering cortisol levels, improving emotional regulation, and activating areas of the brain connected to memory, mood, and connection. For many individuals struggling with trauma and mood disorders, music provides a safe, nonverbal way to process emotions, decrease isolation, and build resilience. 🌊✨

At Beachside Recovery Center for Trauma + Anxiety, healing happens in many forms — and sometimes the most meaningful breakthroughs happen between the notes.

🎸 Heal. Connect. Create.
🎵 Find your rhythm. Rewrite your story.
