⭐️ 🧠 WELCOME TO THE TEAM 🧠 ⭐️

Alyssa Breznitsky, BS, GSBAI

Program Manager | Beachside Applied Behavior Analysis
Graduate Student Behavior Analyst Intern, Ohio State University
Behavior Analysis | Behavioral Interventions | Academic Case Management
Enneagram 6

Alyssa Breznitsky joins Beachside Behavioral Health Services with more than 10 years of experience working with children in K–3 educational settings, bringing a strong background in early childhood development, differentiated instruction, classroom behavior, and individualized academic support.

Alyssa earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education from the University of Memphis and has spent her career working directly with young children as a kindergarten and second-grade teacher. Her experience includes developing individualized and developmentally appropriate learning strategies, implementing structured classroom routines, assessing student progress, addressing diverse learning and behavioral needs, and collaborating closely with parents to support children across academic, social, emotional, and behavioral domains.

She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Applied Behavior Analysis at The Ohio State University and is completing her graduate practicum, where she is gaining supervised clinical experience working directly with patients and applying behavior-analytic principles in practice.

At Beachside, Alyssa serves as Program Manager for Beachside Applied Behavior Analysis, a specialized division of Beachside Behavioral Health Services. In this leadership role, she helps coordinate the development and day-to-day implementation of the program, with an emphasis on connecting evidence-based behavioral principles with the real-world needs of children, adolescents, and families.

In addition to her responsibilities with Beachside Applied Behavior Analysis, Alyssa works within the Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxiety, another specialized program of Beachside Behavioral Health Services. There, she provides Behavior Analysis, Behavioral Interventions, and Academic Case Management as part of an interdisciplinary approach to care. This role allows her to help bridge the academic, behavioral, developmental, and mental health needs that can significantly affect a child or adolescent’s functioning at home, at school, and within treatment.

Her extensive classroom experience provides Alyssa with a unique understanding of how learning, environment, developmental expectations, emotional functioning, and behavior interact in a child’s day-to-day life. Rather than looking at academic struggles or challenging behaviors in isolation, she works to understand what a behavior is communicating, what environmental factors may be maintaining it, and what skills or supports may be needed to create meaningful change. She collaborates with patients, families, clinicians, and educational systems to help develop practical, evidence-based strategies that can generalize across home, school, and treatment environments.

As an Enneagram 6, Alyssa brings loyalty, dependability, thoughtfulness, and a strong sense of responsibility to her work. She values consistency, collaboration, and strong relationships and strives to create an environment in which children and families feel supported while working toward meaningful, measurable progress.

Outside of Beachside and graduate school, Alyssa loves spending time with her family, going to shows, wakeboarding, boating, working out, boxing, painting, and creating art.

ADOLESCENT INTERVENTION + TRANSPORT 🌊

Substance use in adolescence is often not the whole clinical picture. For some young people, substance use can function as an attempt to cope with trauma, emotional dysregulation, psychiatric symptoms, or distress they do not yet have the language or skills to manage. Addressing the behavior matters—but understanding and treating what is driving it matters, too.

Today, Jill, Steve, Keegan, and Drew came together for an adolescent intervention and behavioral health transport for a young patient who had already made significant progress related to substance use, yet continued to struggle with underlying trauma and mental health symptoms. Those symptoms recently escalated in the community and resulted in a Baker Act evaluation.

Our team met with him on the adolescent unit at Circles of Care, where an important part of the intervention became helping him better understand his diagnostic picture and symptoms in language that felt accessible, developmentally appropriate, and relevant to his lived experience.

After years of confusion surrounding previous diagnoses and why certain interventions had not fully addressed what he was experiencing, having a framework that made sense brought a visible sense of relief. With greater understanding came greater willingness to accept the help being offered and recognize what continued healing could look like.

From there, our team transported him safely to Family First Adolescent Services to begin the next phase of treatment.

And this particular transport had an especially meaningful full-circle moment.

Our newest Adolescent Peer Support Specialist, Keegan, is himself a successful graduate of the same residential program he was now helping another young person enter. He returned not as a patient, but as part of the team helping someone else take that next step. He even had the opportunity to reconnect with his former therapist, who was thrilled to see him and the progress he has made.

That is the power of appropriate treatment, continuity of care, and lived experience transformed into meaningful peer support.

There was so much packed into today’s intervention—clinical collaboration, trust, education, relief, vulnerability, hope, and a young person choosing to accept help.

A heartfelt thank you to Ruth and the team at Circles of Care for the careful and compassionate collaboration on this case, and to Anj, Tom, Erin, Jared, Deon, and the Family First team for once again helping make the transition into care as smooth and supportive as possible.

Behavioral healthcare works best when we work together. 💙

WHEN EVERYTHING FEELS IMPORTANT, EVERYTHING CAN FEEL OVERWHELMING.

At Beachside Behavioral Health Services, we believe good mental health care should do more than provide a place to talk. It should help people understand what is happening in their nervous system, recognize the patterns contributing to distress, and develop practical skills they can use outside the therapy room.

Our licensed clinicians and full clinical team are trained in evidence-based approaches including DBT, EMDR, CBT, behavioral activation, family systems work, psychoeducation, and trauma-informed care. Across our programs, we work with children, adolescents, adults, and families experiencing anxiety, trauma, emotional dysregulation, complex family dynamics, and other behavioral health concerns.

The concept illustrated here is one example of the psychoeducation we use to help patients build greater awareness of where their emotional energy is going. Chronic attempts to manage uncertainty, anticipate every possible outcome, or control circumstances outside of our reach can reinforce anxiety and overwhelm. Learning to identify where we actually have agency creates an opportunity to regulate, problem-solve, establish healthier boundaries, and respond more intentionally.

These aren’t just “coping skills.” They are skills that can be taught, practiced, strengthened, and generalized into everyday life.

Our goal is to continue bringing clinically competent, evidence-informed behavioral health education and treatment into our community—while making mental health concepts understandable and genuinely useful for the people and families we serve.

🏄‍♂️ WELCOME TO THE TEAM, KEEGAN! 🌊

We’re incredibly excited to welcome Keegan Gregory to Beachside Behavioral Health Services—not only as our first sponsored rider, but also as a Adolescent Peer Support Specialist working alongside our team.

Keegan is an avid wakeboarder with aspirations of taking his riding to the professional level. But when we heard the story behind his passion for the sport—and the role wakeboarding played in his own mental health journey—we knew this partnership needed to be about much more than sponsoring an athlete.

We first met Keegan through our community partner, Orlando Watersports Complex (OWC), who also helps support Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxietys experiential Behavioral Activation programming.

Keegan’s story started well before we met him.

As a teenager in high school, Keegan experienced an extremely traumatic event that left him navigating an incredibly painful and vulnerable period in his life. While struggling with his mental health and recognizing that something needed to change, he entered treatment with another valued community partner, Family First Adolescent Services.

It was during an experiential outing at Family First that Keegan discovered wakeboarding.

And something clicked.

“I used to beg my mom to take me to the wakepark when she came down for visits. It became my new obsession—a healthy one. Wakeboarding saved my life along with wanting to do the work. I wanted to work at Family First after I graduated and am interested in the mental health field.”

There’s something powerful about that story.

Clinically, we know that meaningful physical activity, healthy connection, mastery of new skills, and engagement in activities that create purpose and accomplishment can be important components of recovery. Wakeboarding didn’t replace the difficult therapeutic work Keegan chose to do—it became one of the healthy outlets that helped support that work and gave him something meaningful to move toward.

Today, Keegan isn’t just continuing to pursue his own goals. He wants to use his lived experience to help other adolescents who may be going through some of the hardest chapters of their lives.

That’s why we’re even more excited to welcome Keegan to our clinical support team as a Teen Peer Support Specialist, where he’ll support our professionals with adolescent interventions, transports, and our specialized adolescent DBT programming.

We believe strongly in the value of appropriately trained and supervised peer support. Sometimes a young person needs to see someone who has been through difficult things, accepted help, done the work, found healthy passions, and built something meaningful on the other side.

And if we can help Keegan chase his dream of going pro while he helps other young people discover what might become their healthy outlet, purpose, or passion?

That’s exactly the kind of community we want to build.

Welcome to the Beachside team, Keegan. We’re SO stoked to have you. 🤙🌊🏄‍♂️

Today, Jill, Pat, and Drew successfully completed a court-ordered, in-custody transport of one of our forensic patients from the Brevard County Jail directly to LifeSkills Behavioral Health – Fort Lauderdale for high-acuity, primary mental health treatment.

Following authorization by the Court, the patient was released directly into our custody for secure transport and continuity of care.

This is an important part of the wraparound forensic behavioral health services provided through Beachside Recovery Interventions + Consulting, a forensic division of Beachside Behavioral Health Services. Our work can extend well beyond the initial forensic evaluation. Depending on the needs of the case, our team provides:

• Competency and comprehensive forensic mental health evaluations
• Clinical recommendations and treatment planning for the Court
• Coordination with attorneys, courts, correctional facilities, families, and treatment providers
• Identification and placement into clinically appropriate levels of care
• Secure, clinically informed transport directly from custody to treatment
• Ongoing case management, treatment coordination, and continuity-of-care planning
• Expert consultation and testimony when appropriate

For individuals with serious mental illness, the transition from a correctional setting into behavioral healthcare can be a particularly vulnerable point. Continuity matters. A coordinated transition helps reduce gaps in treatment, facilitates timely psychiatric and medication stabilization, and ensures that the individual arrives safely at the level of care identified as clinically appropriate.

Our transport model is intentionally different from simply moving someone from one location to another. These are patients first. Safety and security are essential, but so are dignity, clinical awareness, de-escalation, compassion, and respect throughout the process.

We sincerely thank the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit and the Brevard County Jail for their continued trust in our team to carry out these responsibilities with safety, competence, objectivity, and compassion.

And a special thank you to Barbara, Sheryl, Spencer, and the entire clinical team at LifeSkills Behavioral Health for their collaboration, professionalism, and commitment to ensuring a seamless transition into the next phase of care.

This week our Beachside Center for Trauma + Anxiety Behavioral Activation Group headed out to Orlando Watersports Complex (OWC) for a day on the water wakeboarding. 🌊🏄

Behavioral activation is about more than simply “staying busy.” It’s an evidence-based approach that helps people intentionally engage in meaningful, rewarding, and goal-directed activities—especially when anxiety, low mood, fear, or avoidance are telling them to withdraw.

Wakeboarding gave us an incredible opportunity to put that into practice while reinforcing the four core skill areas of DBT: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

🧠 Mindfulness: Wakeboarding demands present-moment attention—body position, the pull of the cable, the board underneath you, and what’s directly ahead. It’s mindfulness in motion.

🔥 Distress Tolerance: Falling, managing frustration, getting back up, and trying again means experiencing discomfort without immediately escaping it.

🌊 Emotion Regulation: Behavioral activation reminds us that we don’t always have to wait until we feel ready to act. Activities that create movement, mastery, enjoyment, and accomplishment can interrupt avoidance and create positive reinforcement. Sometimes action comes first—and emotion begins to shift afterward.

🤝 Interpersonal Effectiveness: Asking for help, receiving instruction, communicating needs, encouraging each other, and celebrating progress all strengthen effective interpersonal behavior.

That’s what makes experiences like this so valuable: skills practiced in real life become more than concepts discussed in a group room. Participants get to approach instead of avoid, tolerate discomfort, build mastery, connect with others, and experience the reward of doing something challenging and meaningful.

A huge THANK YOU to Orlando Watersports Complex for investing in mental health in our community and helping us create experiences like this. 🩵

Special thanks to Daniel, Louis, Juan and the rest of the boys at OWC for getting our crew dialed in with coaching and support—and a huge thank you to Hyperlite Wakeboards for the sick gear. 🤘

If you haven’t been to OWC and have been wanting to ride—or want to try a sick cable park—head out and see Daniel and the crew or check them out at orlandowatersports.com The park is insane, and these guys are huge supporters of mental health in Central Florida. 🌴🌊

Talk it out. Ride it out. 🤙

WHEN SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS AND THE JUSTICE SYSTEM INTERSECT

This week Jill and Drew were out at the Brevard County Jail conducting a competency evaluation and subsequent comprehensive forensic evaluation for a patient facing serious charges in the context of significant mental health concerns.

This is part of the unique work provided through Beachside Recovery Interventions + Consulting, a specialized division of Beachside Behavioral Health Services.

Severe bipolar disorder with psychotic features can profoundly affect a person’s functioning during an acute episode. Mania may involve impaired judgment, impulsivity, agitation, decreased need for sleep, and disinhibition. When psychosis is present, a person may also experience delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, or a significantly distorted perception of reality.

When symptoms become severe, a psychiatric crisis can sometimes lead to involvement with law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Importantly, having bipolar disorder does not make someone inherently dangerous or criminal. Justice-system involvement is complex and may be influenced by illness severity, substance use, access to treatment, treatment interruption, and other circumstances.

A competency evaluation addresses a specific question: does the individual currently have the capacity to understand the proceedings and meaningfully assist in their defense? A diagnosis alone does not determine competency.

Our forensic evaluations are independent and objective. We do not begin with a predetermined conclusion or advocate for an outcome. Opinions are developed from the available evidence using established scientific knowledge, reliable clinical methods, appropriate assessment practices, collateral information, and recognized diagnostic principles. Our conclusions must follow the evidence—and we remain within the limits of our professional expertise.

Because when severe mental illness enters the courtroom, the answer isn’t assumption or stigma.

It’s objective evaluation, sound science, and an evidence-based understanding of the person behind the case.

🩵When Trust Creates Transformation: Advancing EMDR for Complex Trauma

This week, our Founder and Chief Clinical Officer, Drew Breznitsky, MA, LMHC, had the privilege of assisting his former EMDR teacher and mentor, Dr. Andrew Dobo, alongside respected colleague and EMDR educator Ryan Terry, MA, LMHC, at an EMDR Educators of Florida training.

As part of the training, Drew was invited to present a case study involving a patient with a long history of chronic complex developmental trauma. The case highlighted more than two years of intentional therapeutic work and demonstrated that healing from severe, longstanding trauma is possible when treatment is delivered thoughtfully, patiently, and safely.

One of the myths still encountered in the mental health community is that EMDR should not be used with individuals who have complex developmental trauma. Current research and expert consensus suggest otherwise. EMDR is recognized as an evidence-based treatment for PTSD, and when adapted appropriately using a phased, stabilization-first approach, it can be highly effective for many individuals with complex trauma. Success depends not on rushing into trauma processing, but on careful case conceptualization, preparation, emotional regulation, and a strong therapeutic relationship.

During the presentation, Drew emphasized one of the most important lessons from this case: healing begins with trust.

For individuals whose trauma developed through years of abuse, neglect, or attachment injuries, the therapeutic relationship often becomes the first experience of consistent emotional safety. Before trauma memories can be processed, patients must experience a relationship where they feel understood, respected, and in control. Only then can they remain grounded while processing painful experiences rather than becoming overwhelmed by them.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Andrew Dobo and Ryan Terry for the opportunity to contribute to the education of approximately 40 new and developing EMDR therapists. By sharing this case, we hope to help future clinicians better understand how to safely, ethically, and effectively treat individuals living with complex trauma.

Most importantly, however, the true hero of this story is the patient.

With tremendous courage, vulnerability, and generosity, they gave permission for their journey to be shared for educational purposes so that other therapists—and ultimately thousands of future patients—might benefit from what they have learned. Their willingness to transform personal suffering into hope and education is an extraordinary testament to the healing they have achieved.

We are also honored that this patient’s story is featured in Dr. Andrew Dobo’s newest book, Transformational EMDR: The Manual, where it continues to educate clinicians committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based trauma care.

At Beachside Behavioral Health Services, we remain committed to advancing the field of trauma treatment through clinical excellence, education, collaboration, and, above all, the trusting therapeutic relationships that make healing possible. 💙
