Birth doula or postpartum doula — which one is you? The deep intensity of the labor room, or the quiet, healing work of the weeks after?

I couldn’t choose either. That’s why I eventually decided to make my program a dual full-spectrum certification — full birth AND postpartum training in one. Because the women who feel called to this work usually feel called to all of it or at least want the option to do one or the other depending on the season.

And practically, that just means two income streams. Births in your flexible months, postpartum shifts in your busy ones. That way you can build the career around YOUR life. 🕯️

Over the course of 8 years of being his “mom,” he has called me Umma. My Mommy. My Foster Mom. My Guardian.

Today, at 13, two years after reunifying with his biological mom, I am “Mrs. Irene.”

No name ever felt just right. Every single one so bittersweet. We were all just trying to put words to what was needed at the time. It was imperfect. Chaotic. So confusing at times. But now seeing how it all turned out, the names really didn’t matter. He had what he needed at the time; he has what he needs now.

Now he has grown so much that he can hold me in his arms the way I once held him. 🥲 And I am grateful I still get to watch him grow.

Happy belated to the young man who made me a mother in a whole new way. ❤️

The birth of a child and their mother comes in so many forms. We honor all the beautifully unique paths.

Most doula trainings certify you, hand you a folder, and wish you luck.

Mine doesn’t work that way. Halfway through my program you’re already working with real clients… with me right beside you.

Full birth AND postpartum certification. On-the-job mentorship. Even the business side: contracts, pricing, finding clients.

All of it, for nine full months.

I have so much respect for nurses and what they do. I also constantly think, how do they do this??? These 12 hour shifts every single week. I also have seen so many of these nurses operate like doulas. You already have the knowledge. You already love the birth room. You’re already called to this work. The only difference is as a doula, you work for yourself and have more flexibility and freedom.
