LET’S TALK ABOUT FIBER — Are You Getting Enough?

When we talk about nutrition, we hear a LOT about protein (and you know I’m a big believer in getting enough protein! ), but there’s another nutrient I think we need to pay much more attention to:

FIBER.

I generally recommend aiming for around 25–35 grams of fiber per day — and many people aren’t getting anywhere close to that.

Fiber does so much more than just keep you regular.

Why is fiber so important?

Fiber can help support:

*Healthy cholesterol
Certain soluble fibers can bind with bile acids in the digestive tract, helping your body eliminate them rather than reabsorb them.

*Better blood sugar control
Fiber slows digestion and glucose absorption, which can help reduce those big blood sugar spikes after meals.

*Appetite & weight management
Fiber helps you feel fuller longer, which can make it easier to manage hunger and cravings.

*A healthy gut microbiome
Certain fibers act as prebiotics — food for the beneficial bacteria living in your gut.

*Regular bowel movements & elimination
Fiber helps move waste through the digestive tract and supports healthy bowel function.

*Hormone metabolism
Healthy bowel elimination is one of the ways the body gets rid of metabolized hormones and other waste products. Fiber helps support that process.

And here’s something important…

**There are different types of fiber.

Soluble fiber absorbs water and forms a gel-like substance in the digestive tract. It’s especially helpful for cholesterol, blood sugar, satiety and feeding beneficial gut bacteria.

Insoluble fiber adds bulk and helps keep things moving through the intestines.

Ideally, we want BOTH.

Great food sources include:
• Berries
• Apples and pears with the skin
• Vegetables
• Beans, chickpeas & lentils
• Oats and other whole grains
• Chia & flax seeds
• Nuts & seeds
• Avocado

One thing I’ve learned personally is that getting 25–35 grams every single day isn't always easy!

I try to get as much as possible from whole foods, but I also use a fiber supplement myself to help me consistently reach my goal.

If you’re currently eating very little fiber, don't jump from 10 grams to 30 grams overnight! Increase it gradually and make sure you're drinking plenty of water.

Try tracking your fiber for just ONE day. I was surprised at how little I actually got!

You may be surprised by how much — or how little — you're actually getting.

We talk a lot about protein, hormones, supplements and medications, but sometimes improving health starts with something as simple as feeding your gut and getting enough fiber every day.

Goal: 25–35 grams per day. How close are you?

PROGESTERONE: The Forgotten Hormone of Perimenopause

When women think about menopause hormones, estrogen usually gets all the attention.

But progesterone often starts changing years before menopause—and those changes may be part of why some women suddenly say:

-“Why am I waking up at 3 AM? -“Why do I feel anxious or on edge?”
-“Why are my periods suddenly so heavy or unpredictable?”
-“Why do I feel completely different even though I’m still having periods?”

Here are a few things women should know about progesterone:

1. Progesterone starts declining when ovulation becomes less consistent.
Progesterone is primarily produced after ovulation. During perimenopause, we may begin skipping ovulation even while we're still getting periods.

That means progesterone can decline while estrogen is still fluctuating—sometimes dramatically.

2. Progesterone does more than regulate your period.
Progesterone and its metabolites interact with the brain and nervous system. One metabolite, allopregnanolone, interacts with GABA receptors—the same calming system involved in relaxation and sleep.

For some women, micronized progesterone can be especially helpful when sleep becomes a problem during the menopause transition.

3. Progesterone and progestins aren't exactly the same thing.
Micronized progesterone is structurally identical to the progesterone produced by the body.

Synthetic progestins are different molecules designed to produce some progesterone-like effects.

4. Progesterone has an important protective job.
If a woman has a uterus and uses systemic estrogen, adequate progesterone/progestogen is generally needed to protect the uterine lining from excessive stimulation.

So progesterone isn't simply an “extra” hormone added to estrogen—it plays a very important role in safe hormone therapy.

5. More isn't always better.
Some women feel wonderful on progesterone. Others may experience grogginess or dizziness.

Hormone therapy should never be one-size-fits-all.

One of the biggest misconceptions about perimenopause is that we have to wait for hot flashes or for our periods to stop before hormones matter.

Your hormones may begin changing years earlier.

If you're in your 40s (or sometimes even your late 30s) and suddenly aren't sleeping, your cycles have changed, your bleeding is heavier, or you simply don't feel like yourself anymore…

It's worth asking why.

At Luxe Longevity, our goal isn't simply to prescribe hormones. It's to look at your symptoms, history and overall health and help you understand what your body may be telling you.

You deserve to understand your hormones—not just survive them.

Educational information only. Hormone therapy should be individualized with a qualified healthcare provider.

I love the DUTCH test! It tells me sooooo much info! All me questions. I'd love to share!

A lab value within the reference range doesn’t always explain why someone is experiencing symptoms. Hormone health is influenced by far more than a single number, which is why context matters.

Rather than evaluating hormones in isolation, the DUTCH Test looks at hormone production, metabolism, and the influence of stress physiology to provide a more comprehensive view of what’s happening beneath the surface. Combined with a patient’s history and symptoms, these patterns can help guide more individualized clinical decisions.

You don’t have to feel sick for your labs to be telling you something.

Many changes in metabolic health, hormones, thyroid function, inflammation, nutrient status, and cardiovascular risk can begin before you notice obvious symptoms.

That’s why comprehensive lab testing can be such a valuable part of proactive health care.

Our Advanced Longevity Panel looks at 67 biomarkers to help give us a more complete picture of what’s happening inside your body
— and, more importantly, help guide the conversation about what you can do with that information.

We look at areas such as:
• Blood sugar & insulin — to better understand metabolic health and how your body is handling glucose
• Cholesterol & cardiovascular markers — to provide more insight into heart-health risk factors
• Inflammation — because chronic inflammation can be an important piece of your overall health picture
• Hormones & adrenal markers — which can provide insight related to energy, stress response, reproductive health, and healthy aging
• Thyroid markers — going beyond TSH alone for a more complete look at thyroid function
• Nutrients & organ function — to evaluate important markers related to your overall health and wellbeing

The goal isn’t simply to collect more numbers.
It’s to understand your numbers, identify areas that may deserve attention, and use that information to make more informed decisions about your health.

Because longevity isn’t only about adding years to your life. It’s about protecting the health and function you want to have during those years.

August Advanced Longevity Panel Special: $450
Regularly $700 | Available August 1–31

I preach it all the time... "Eat more protein!"

But why?

Here's the part many people don't realize...

Your body doesn't actually use protein—it uses the amino acids that protein is made of.

Think of protein as a pile of bricks.

Your digestive system breaks protein down into individual amino acids, and those amino acids become the building blocks your body uses to repair, rebuild, and function every single day.

Amino acids help:
✔️ Build and repair muscles
✔️ Support healthy collagen production for skin, joints, and connective tissue
✔️ Produce hormones and neurotransmitters
✔️ Strengthen the immune system
✔️ Support liver detoxification
✔️ Improve energy production
✔️ Help maintain healthy circulation and fluid balance

This is why I spend so much time encouraging my patients to eat enough high-quality protein.
As we age—or during times of stress, illness, surgery, or increased physical demands—our bodies often need even more of these essential building blocks.

For some people, a professional-grade amino acid supplement can also be beneficial, especially if they're not getting enough protein or aren't digesting it well.

One thing I've personally noticed is that after adding a high-quality amino acid supplement to my daily routine, my chronic ankle swelling has significantly improved. While everyone's body is different and this isn't something everyone will experience, it reminded me just how important it is to give our bodies the nutrients they need to repair and function optimally.

At Luxe Longevity, my goal isn't just to recommend supplements—it's to help you understand why your body needs them and when they may be helpful.

Sometimes better health starts with something as simple as giving your body the building blocks it needs.

Were you aware that protein has to be broken down into amino acids before your body can use it?
