Safe Kids Savannah

Safe Kids Savannah Safe Kids Savannah's mission is to prevent childhood injuries across Coastal Georgia.

The Safe Kids Savannah Coalition was initiated in 1988 in response to a nation wide call from Dr. Martin Eichelberger, a pediatric surgeon practicing at the Children's Medical Center in Washington, DC. In Savannah, representatives from local organizations and individuals came together with the common goal of preventing accidental childhood injuries. Today the Coalition's work continues in that same spirit in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan, and Liberty counties.

Every year, hundreds of kids and teens find unsecured guns and unintentionally shoot themselves or others.

On National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we to highlight the importance of secure gun storage. Storing guns locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition can save lives.

School is out, so you may see more children riding their bikes. Share the road with cyclists! Slow down to 10 miles below the speed limit and give at least 3 feet of space when passing people riding bicycles. ๐Ÿšฆโœจ

National Heat Awareness Day serves as a reminder that heatstroke happens faster than we think โ€” especially for kids.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ NEVER leave a child inside a vehicle.
๐ŸŒก๏ธ ALWAYS look before you lock.

Did you know that more older children and teens drown in open water than in pools? A day at the beach or the lake is fun for kids, but open water also has risks, which are different from those in a swimming pool. According to the United States Coast Guard, 87% of people who drown while boating were not wearing a life jacket. Be aware of situations that are unique to open water, such as limited visibility, depth, uneven surfaces, currents, and undertow.

This year, 5 children have died in hot cars nationwide, with 3 incidents reported in the past two days, a tragic reminder that we can all take steps to help prevent hot car deaths. It only takes a few minutes for a car to heat up and become deadly to a child inside. As summer temperatures rise, more kids are at risk. It's never OK to leave a child alone in a car, not even for a minute, and not even with the window cracked or the car running.
