Parenting has always been hard. But parenting in a culture of constant comparison is something different.

Marisa azaret explains what that pressure is doing to parents — and why “perfect parenting” may be making things harder.

Parenting didn’t suddenly become harder because parents became less capable.

We are parenting inside a culture of comparison.

We see what everyone else is doing. We have access to endless information about what we should be doing. And somewhere along the way, being a “good parent” started to feel like another impossible standard to meet.

Dr. Marisa Azaret put words to something so many parents feel:

The constant comparison can leave parents feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed and eventually wondering, “Maybe I just can’t do this.”

This conversation is exactly why we created The Compass Method.

Dr. Yolanda Rivera Caudill and I want to bring credible experts and real science into conversations that families can actually understand — without adding another layer of pressure or perfection.

Our conversation with Dr. Azaretexplores parenting, anxiety, screens, resilience, regulation and what the modern world is doing to the developing brain.

And this work doesn’t have to stay inside the podcast.

Purpose & Plants works with schools, parent groups, community organizations and workplaces to bring these conversations directly to families.

❓Why does parenting feel harder than it used to❓‼️

Our kids are growing up in a world their developing brains were never exactly designed for—constant stimulation, screens, social media, packed schedules, less unstructured play, and more pressure seemingly everywhere.

And, as parents, we’re trying to figure it out while navigating many of those same pressures ourselves.

On this episode of The Compass Method, Yolanda Rivera-Caudill and I sit down with Dra. Marisa Azaret Azaret, Director of Clinical Psychology at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, for a conversation I think every parent, educator, and person who cares about kids should hear.

We talk about anxiety and attention. Screens and social media. Discipline versus punishment. Resilience and independence. Sleep, movement and nourishment. And something I found particularly important: how much our own nervous systems influence the emotional environment our children grow up in.

There is so much noise around parenting right now. This conversation isn’t about adding another list of things to get right. It’s about understanding what developing brains actually need—and finding realistic ways to create more connection, resilience and emotional health at home.

What if being tired has simply become your normal?

“I’m not a morning person.”
“I need coffee before I can function.”
“I always crash around three.”
“I’m just busy.”

At some point, we can become so accustomed to fatigue that we stop asking why we’re tired in the first place.

On this week’s The Compass Method, Dr. Yolanda and I talk about sleep, iron, thyroid function, evening exercise, recovery—and some of the habits we may have carried with us since college without realizing it.

And we ask a question I think is worth considering:

What may need medical attention—and what daily pattern may still be reinforcing the fatigue?

Sometimes the biggest change isn’t in your schedule—it’s in your perspective.

Join us at the Dorm Room Ready workshop to prepare for these challenges before they arise! As students transition to college, our hope is that they begin this new chapter with good habits that protect their health, resilience, and well-being.

The dorm room may be packed—but is your student prepared for the decisions waiting on the other side of move-in day?

The greatest challenges of freshman year are not always academic.

National college-health data show that more than three out of four undergraduates get fewer than eight hours of sleep on weeknights. The latest Healthy Minds Study found that 37% of students screened positive for moderate or severe depressive symptoms, 33% for moderate or severe anxiety, and 67% said emotional or mental difficulties had affected their academic performance during the previous four weeks.

Most students know that sleep, nourishing food, movement, and healthy relationships matter. The harder part is knowing what to do when the dining hall feels overwhelming, the roommate relationship becomes uncomfortable, or stress begins to spiral.

That's why we created Dorm Room Ready.

In one afternoon, students and parents will leave with practical tools they can begin using immediately, including:

• A realistic sleep and caffeine strategy
• Dining hall defaults and dorm-room food plans
• An Emergency Reset for stressful moments
• Roommate and boundary-setting scripts
• A connection plan for building healthy relationships and asking for help
• A First 14 Days Blueprint for starting college with intention
• A Weekly CEO Meeting to stay focused and on track

Parents will also leave with practical coaching questions, ways to support independence without immediately rescuing, and guidance on recognizing when a student may need additional help.

Every family receives the Dorm Room Ready Playbook, filled with recipes, grocery lists, trackers, checklists, stress-management tools, roommate scripts, and parent resources to use throughout the first semester.

College doesn't have to mean running on caffeine, constant stress, and an empty tank—but for many students, that's exactly what happens.

The transition to college is exciting, but it's also one of the biggest lifestyle changes a young adult will face. Without healthy habits in place, it's easy for sleep, nutrition, movement, and mental well-being to take a back seat.

As a parent, you can't choose every decision your student will make once they arrive on campus. But you can help them prepare before they get there.

Join us for Dorm Room Ready: Wellness Boot Camp for College-Bound Students and help your student learn practical, science-backed strategies to manage their energy, fuel their brain, and build simple habits that support focus, resilience, and long-term success—without depending on another energy drink.

Perfect for rising seniors, college-bound students, and families who want more than survival mode.

Stocking your dorm room pantry is just as important as learning to make nutritious choices in the dining hall. Having wholesome, convenient foods on hand makes it easier to fuel your body between classes, avoid relying on vending machines, and start your day with lasting energy.

These dorm-friendly overnight oats are a perfect example: no stove required, easy to prepare the night before, and packed with ingredients to help keep you satisfied throughout a busy morning.

Ready to build healthy habits before college starts? Join our Dorm Room Ready workshop and learn practical, lifestyle medicine–based strategies to stock your dorm, navigate the dining hall with confidence, and create healthy routines that last long after move-in day.
