I recently had a woman go through menopause much later than usual (age 57) whose cholesterol numbers changed dramatically. Her HDL (good cholesterol) decreased by 20 points and her LDL (bad cholesterol) increased by 50 points. One of the reasons is estrogen, which most experts now believe that it protects the heart, which is why heart attacks are more uncommon in women under the age of 50. She will undergo a calcium scoring test. If abnormal, we will proceed with a CTA, which determines the patency (openness) of her coronary arteries. This is one more example of the benefits of hormone replacement therapy.
