Join Maine Children’s Cancer Program TOMORROW at Hadlock Field as we team up with the Portland Sea Dogs to cheer on Michael, our first Hero at Hadlock for the 2026 Strike Out Cancer in Kids Season! ⚾💛

Michael was your typical 16-year-old enjoying his sophomore year when he was diagnosed in April 2025 with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), a rare pediatric cancer. Despite the challenges that come with chemotherapy and treatment, Michael continued doing what he loves most, which is playing on his varsity tennis team with determination and heart.

Thanks to that determination and strength, Michael rang the bell this past April, marking the end of his treatment! Michael’s resilience and positive spirit, which got him through treatment, continue to inspire everyone around him.

Michael and his family would also like to sincerely thank the medical teams at Maine Children's Cancer Program and Barbara Bush Children's for their exceptional care, compassion, and support throughout his journey, along with their family and friends for the endless love, encouragement, and support they received every step of the way.

Buy your ticket for tomorrow's game using the link below, and part of the proceeds will go towards supporting kids like Michael. 🎗️

We’re continuing to celebrate National Nurses Month because who would we be without nurses, not just those who work in our clinic, but all the nurses who dedicate their lives to caring for others. We are so grateful for everything you do! 💛

Meet Pam, another incredible Registered Nurse we’ve been fortunate to have at MCCP for 25 years! Even after all these years, Pam is still inspired most by the time she spends with her patients. Her “littles” (and sometimes not-so-little patients) are what continue to brighten her days. In addition to her role as an RN, Pamela is also a transplant coordinator who has organized bone marrow drives in her local communities over the years.

When Pam isn’t doing the incredible work she does both in and outside the clinic, you can find her enjoying some of her favorite hobbies, including painting, gardening, reading, and taking in all that our beautiful state of Maine has to offer. A fun fact about Pamela: she’s a Baxter State Park superfan and has hiked every trail on Katahdin! ⛰️

Thank you, Pam, and all the nurses out there who continue to be some of the most dedicated members of our communities! 🎗️

🎗️International Cancer Research Month 🎗️

This month is all about progress, hope, and the power of research. Cancer research is how we move closer to cures, improve treatments, and create better outcomes—especially for children facing childhood cancer.

Every breakthrough starts with support. Every discovery brings us one step closer to a future where kids can spend more time being kids and less time being patients. 💛

You can be part of that progress. Consider donating to Maine Children’s Cancer Program Fund to help support lifesaving research and critical care for children and families right here in Maine.

Together, we can keep hope moving forward!

💛 $344,304 raised this year—thank you, Maine Elks Association! 💛
We were so proud to join the Maine Elks this May at their State Convention, where they revealed their annual fundraising total in support of Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Their remarkable contribution of $344,304 helps ensure we can continue delivering critical, compassionate care to children and families across Maine. 🎗️

As the Elks’ major statewide project, this partnership represents years of generosity and commitment that truly changes lives. Their continued support means more than we can express.

From all of us at MCCP, thank you for your ongoing dedication and for being such an important part of our mission. 🎉

Today is National Nurses Day, and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than by highlighting one of the incredible nurses who makes our clinic so special. We are deeply grateful for each and every one of our nurses, who consistently go above and beyond for their patients and for the program.

Meet Jackie O’Kelly, one of our dedicated Registered Nurses! Jackie has been with the clinic for two years and is continually inspired by the courage and resilience of her patients. Supporting both patients and their families through such a challenging chapter in their lives is what drives her and fuels the compassion she brings to her work every day.

When Jackie isn’t caring for others, you can find her chasing her 1-year-old, Finley, alongside her golden retriever, Winnie. She’s also an avid runner and enjoys spending time at the lake while working on her latest crocheting project.

We are so thankful for Jackie and all of our RNs whose compassion, dedication, and heart make a lasting impact on our patients and families every single day.

A BIG SHOUT-OUT TO SWISH OUT! 🎉🏀

C U Swish Out Childhood Cancer—Maine’s longest-running 3-on-3 charity basketball tournament, returned for its 32nd year on April 11. Forty players gathered at the University of Southern Maine gymnasium in Gorham for a day of basketball, all to benefit Maine Children’s Cancer Program.

Thanks to individual fundraising efforts and generous local sponsorships, Swish Out raised more than $30,000 this year! To date, the event has raised over $800,000 and is closing in on the $1 million milestone.

Events like Swish Out, and the incredible people who make them possible, allow MCCP to continue supporting children facing cancer and blood disorders. 🎗️

Meet Sunita Nijhawan, the incredible woman behind our new neuropsychology service!

Sunita has been with us since November 2024 and hasn’t wasted any time making her mark. In her role, she guides and supports patients as they navigate the neurological changes that can accompany survival from their conditions and treatments. This includes supporting their thinking processes, how they play, and their basic emotional and social functioning. She plays a pivotal role in helping patients adjust to this new chapter of their lives and care.

When Sunita isn’t guiding her patients through their post-treatment journeys, she enjoys spending time with her husband and cat. She also finds joy in learning new skills, such as playing tennis and the bass.

We’re so lucky to have Sunita as part of the family, and we’re thrilled to feature her in this Staff Spotlight!
